Well found myself a 870 wingmaster at a decent price after all these years.

Time to build my first 870.... Im stoked... :p

Only plans so far it to either cut the barrel down to 18.5 or Finding a replacement barrel. I have a few S&J goodies already for it.

Thinking either a Hogue short stock, Or just tracing the profile of my hogue to the old one Cut sand and restain.

I had a look at this thread for inspiration shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=135335

Looks pretty good! I know Dlask sells factory 18s that come off their short builds for $120, which is the best I've seen so far. I'd keep the long barrel and get multiple lengths for different purposes, but that's just me. Have fun with it!

Im worried the Dlask take off barrels won't match the blueing and patina of the gun. I already have hunting shotguns with long barrels.

I could try to sell this one, But the odds of me finding a nice old one that matches are pretty slim...

It's a 5 minute job to chop the barrel, then it all matches. To be honest with the nice wood that's on it, I think that's all I would do to it. You'd have a classic retro riot gun. Nothing you can do to it looks better than that old style wood (I have 3 like that)

I want it to look like my 1974 500 ATP :)

Once I get the gun Ill have a better idea how the stock looks. Should I cut the 870 barrel to the same length as the 500, Would that be the correct length of a 870 of that time period ?

Well Just checked out the Barrel Code, and this 870 was also manufactured in 1974 lol.... What a nice score....

Well with the Ridgid pipe cutter and the reamer tool, this took less than 5 minutes to do. I reblued the end and waiting on my front sight.

I couldn't tell you, Thats a cutter I found in my toolbox. lol....

That cutter is for plastic pipe. But this was a 1 time deal...

The Red Rigid cutters are meant for metal.... The silver ones like mine are for PVC/ABS

Im a carpenter, I might be wrong.... It made a perfect straight cut so im happy....

Nice gun, I have a '51 that looks just like it. I have the short forend though :) What sight are you going with? You'll be hitting waaay high with a standard height bead, I went with an XS big dot which I have yet to test out. All it needs now is a blued tube extension.

I ordered 2 different sights from Brownells and a new tube spring.

-HiViz
-Marble Arms

Hopefully one of them will work out.

600$ lol... thats funny.... I picked it up for 200 so If I can get 300 out of it ill be happy....

Dont worry, im shortening the stock, re-staining it and making it even more my own... lol...

But please explain to me how much more square you think I need to go ?

Good scoop on the price, so that offsets the barrel cut. Judging by this pic, with the barrel facing from the bottom toward the top, it sure looks way outta whack. I noticed in yer pic that you've since'd cleaned up the muzzle a tad and taken the pic from the bottom side.

The best way to cut a barrel is on a lathe using a parting tool properly squared to the face of the chuck &
with cutting fluid. After the cut, you then will need to finish the muzzle with a piloted facing cutter with
the correct diameter pilot bushing installed...in the case of the 870, that would be a 730" bushing, and again
that would be done slowly with cutting fluid & light pressure.

The last 870 I saw at a recent gun show in the condition yours was in sold for just under 6 bills. The early 870's
in good shape are drying up fast & shotgun fans don't mind spending the coin on 'em.

If they paid 6 bills for an old Wingmaster they are getting gouged. I currently have 9 and paid $250 for one that looked like it came out of the box yesterday. If they were 3" you could ad 100 more but that's it. One thing though, the EE is definitely not the place to look for a cheap wingmaster

I don't have access to a lathe and i'm not paying someone for one either. Thats just a waste of money, Might as well buy a new barrel at that point.

Thats the whole reason behind the chop. No cost to me and now I have something I can have fun with.

How true, but Wingmaster folks can be funky on pricing as can be Model 12 Winchester fans. Really pays to hunt for the deals. Gunshows of course can be a gouge.;)

Nice project, amazing how a barrel chop takes a gun from good mannered to azz kicker. The only thing I'd do (you said you are a carpenter) would be to make a complete new butt stock and perhaps foregrip. I'm a woodworker myself and it's one of the project things I'm looking forward to doing.
