WK180C Shorter barrel options?

Registration leads to confiscation. This has been proven over and over and over again. Australia, the UK (in 2020 and twice before that), Canada (Pistol bans in cities, AR15s, etc), the European Union, the list goes on. At every opportunity where a anti-gun government can do so it will force registration and then use that to confiscate. It's not an if but a when.

The more NR black rifles out there the better.

We need to be pushing semi-auto rifles as the primary hunting, target shooting and competition rifle of choice.

I don't think anybody is disagreeing with your assertion but you can change the WC SBR back to non restricted or have more then one. That is not the topic of this thread as having one in SBR allows for great range fun with 3 gun or any of the other practical shooting sport orgs.

I get what you're saying but do you own any restricted firearms?

There are a lot of folks out there that have a plethora of restricteds and NRs, including doubles (one R and one NR) of each firearm for that express reason. Like, this thread is about advice on building SBR WKs

Except my two primary 3 gun / IPSC rifles are (should I say were) 18in barrels with rifle length gas systems. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the utility and fun factor of an SBR but outside of CQB, or perhaps local matches where the longest shot is still under 100m, they don’t offer any competitive advantage for most of the 3 gun matches I’ve shot.

I agree though...sort of off topic. Apologies.

Virtual Chris...that WK does look pretty cool. I think it’s an improvement over the esthetics of the original.

The fun factor and utility is the operative factor for myself. As mentioned, it's possible to have multiple firearms - some registered and some not. I'm lucky to be in a position where I can do this and understand the risks of it being registered. i have a WS-MCR that's set up as a DMR as well (unless they go prohib, then I'll have sold it before then so i won't have one if that's the case....)

So I got my WK180C with 12.5" barrel out to the range this weekend after my Registration Certificate arrived in the mail.

I've opted to put the TNA linear compensator on the end as it is noticeably louder now with the shorter barrel... and I do notice more fire coming out the end :D

The rifle performed well on the 100 rounds I fired. It took me a bit to re-zero my optic so it's a bit early to tell if accuracy improved or not, but I recon the rifle is way more accurate than I am.

I did have one instance of a failure-to-fire, where the bolt didn't completely lockup so the firing pin didn't hit the primer. I'm not sure why that's the case... but I had this issue before the barrel swap which makes sense as it's something to do with the bolt or cam or machining on the upper. I need to talk to Owen and see what he thinks.

I love the upgrade... It's way easier to handle, looks a lot better and there's less weight on the business end as well.

I would get these in cold weather. I had been using white lithium grease as a lubricant which begins to freeze at -17°.

With the bolt not locking up, I found that happened a couple times for me on an older WK that my buddy lent me way back. He hadn't cleaned the bolt carrier (or anything at all) from new and just literally sprayed G96 all over the bolt carrier and nothing else. The combo of that gunk after awhile gummed it up. I took the BCG apart and cleaned it off and never happened again.

It could definitely be the frozen grease, though, as mentioned above.

I just use plain ol' G96 for everything on this gun, though.

Thanks guys, I doubt it's frozen gunk, as it hasn't been below freezing here (Vancouver) and certainly wasn't the day I was out. It's also very clean after coming back. I suspect it's something to do with the bolt cam and/or machining on the upper.

Hey VC how do you find the bolt hold lever at that angle?

Yes, thanks for asking because I was also going to ask about that! Would love to hear if you've tried the 90-degree way and the way you have it now, and if you have thoughts on how you like it both ways.

I've only ever run one 90-degrees so may try this depending on how you like it!

Kodiak let me know my registered WK was done last week so I'm just waiting on the transfer to go through as well.

I'll post up an in-depth review and comparison as well once I get a few hundred down the pipe. :)

What colour is that receiver set?

The problem with going from NR to R for me is now they know I have it...Even if I put it back to NR, they still know where to look for it if they want to take it.

After May 1, I am skittish about ever registering another gun.

If you're worried about tipping off the government as to which guns you own, you'll need to go a little farther and not post under your own name!

Hey VC how do you find the bolt hold lever at that angle?

I tried it pointing towards the 9-o'clock position and it wasn't that ergonomic.... hard to reach. This way, I can pull the charging lever back with my curled index finger on my left hand, and push the lever forward with my thumb at the same time, allowing me to hold the bolt open with one hand. With a stretch, you can also release the bolt with your right hand thumb, but I tend to release the bolt by pulling on it slightly with my left hand.

That's interesting, we clearly have different hand sizes as I can do it at the 90 degree relatively comfortably. But it's great that we have th echoice, if I wasn't such a goof with small parts I'd be tempted to take it apart and re-install it like yours just to try.

I'm gonna try it like that and see which I prefer - thanks for the info. I currently run mine at 90 as it was as close to an AR as possible - i.e. jam the mag in and then hit the release with my left thumb. On this platform, I just have to sweep the thumb back a little further at 90 but I can see the appeal of doing the one-handed BHO.

I really only use the bolt hold lever for holding the bolt open when I have need for it (like a jam or PROVE it's safe). Otherwise, when swapping mags, I just tug on the charging handle to release it... that seems easier/faster than finding the lever.

That's great... I found myself contorting my hand to try and do it one-handed with the lever pointing at 90-deg. Ideally, I'd have it pointing straight down, but the elbow won't allow that as it interferes with the safety.
