Wolf/Antelope Rifle ... Success pics, post 126

Think about the 7mm/08 !!! Short action... available in most gun designs.....and lots of energy when it gets there...for the reloader there's a good choise of loads to tinker with check them out.....

It's a great little all-round cartridge just not a great choice for a dedicated speed-goat rifle.

Not to mention that the 7-08 is lately found it's niche as a girl's rifle and not considered a manly cartridge by us manly men. ;)

Just got a call from the gunsmith, and my barrel has arrived:dancingbanana:. He is going to work over the action for me and screw it all together, then give it a matte bluing. Due to the condition of the donor action, It looks like it is going to cost me a bit more than planned, but at least I am going to get a proper custom out of the deal, rather than a rebarreled 700. I guess this is to be expected, I have spent enough now to buy a cooper or an h-s precision.

Now if bell and carlson would get off their asses and ge my stock to me, all would be good. I should have some photos of the final product in a few weeks.

If the range of engagement is within 100 to 150 yards has anyone mentioned the idea of a Rossi 92 winchester clone shooting heavy bullets from max load .357Magnum casings yet? I don't want to check through all 9 pages of posts to find out.

I'm basing this on the fact that I was shooting at a 12 inch gong at 200 meters and getting 8 out of 10 to hit even with iron sights. Admittedly using a rest but still. In a tight woods environment I suspect that the engagement distances would be at or less than 100 yards. At those distances and with a bit of help for bracing from any convenient tree I'd expect some really good shooting with enough power to do the job.

Temper all this with the fact that I'm not a hunter. And frankly unless I knew that the wolf population in the area was too high for the amount of legit game in the area I can't see myself actually taking out such an animal. But from my own experince shooting my Cowboy Action Rossi 92 at the gongs using Magnum reloads with heavier bullets I'd be confident that the round could do the job.

And best of all the rifle would sit lightly on the back when not in use.

I appreciate where you are coming from, but intend to use this rifle on antelope as well. Generally 200 yds is a chip shot in that game.

If i was looking at something for quick engagement, specifically for wolf, a semi-auto 243 would be the ticket, in my mind. Although I have not been there yet, I have talked to guys who ended up calling in a pack.

Great choice.......Ive been thinking about the same project for a while now . One day Ill grab a tired boring 30-06 with a good action and stock and get a 6.5 pipe fitted. The only problem with 6.5-06 is that you likely end up reaching for it more often that you think leaving your other rifles collecting dust.

My other suggestion before catching up in the thread would of been 240 wby for the cool factor if nothing else.

My 25-06AI Cooper wearing VXL 4.5-14x56. Works good on coyotes as well, little hard on the hides though:p

I looked all over the hills for wolves the last 9 days didn't see any the rifles I had ready if I saw one where a Robinson Arms XCR-L in 223 loaded with 60gr Sierra HP Varminters @ 3000fps for max 300 yard shots and my 300RUM loaded with 200gr Accubonds @ 3200fps for out to 500 yards.

I had an awesome 6.5-06. Didn't love it enough to keep it; it was just a 270 with a different name.

For what you want? I would buy an SPS Stainless 25-06 and put it in a Ti take-off stock. I did that once already, and wasn't smart enough to keep it. It was perfect.

Well, I got her home on Saturday. We had decent weather yesterday, so I slipped out and fired a couple rounds, though nothing formal enough to get any real data, i just had to pull the trigger.

What I ended up with was a pre j-lock M700 action squared up and trued, with a new recoil lug that was double pinned. A Ron Smith gain twist barrel was then chambered to 6.5-06, and cut to 24" with a target crown then screwed on. A timney trigger was installed, and the unit was bedded into a B&C medalist stock.

I got it home, and mounted a VX-II 4-12x40 in Talley one peice rings, and now need the weather to smarten up enough for a proper break in and range work. Of course, i will snap some proper photos of her for you guys too.:p
