Wolf Defence... coyotes for the easterners

What .223 ammo do you use for wolves with your MR1?

I've used the Remington UMC 50 gr. HP quite often, it seems to get around 1.5" groups with that. I haven't put a lot of premium ammo through it, but from my experience 1.5-2 MOA is about the best it'll do. It's not a great long range gun, I've also got an Aimpoint Comp M4 on it now so that's a 150 yds and under type deal for me.

Mine does 2" - 3" off of a front bag with bulk ball ammo at 100 yards. That's with a PA 1-6x on 6x.

I have Winchester 45gr JHPs, 64gr Powerpoints and 62gr Federal Fusion. The heavier bullets say deer/antelope on their boxes but I doubt I'll use them on game that big.

Yeah I strictly use it for short range predator hunting, I have a 22-250 and 257 Wby for longer range use.
I've also fired quite a bit of yellow box Norinco and steel cased Wolf ammo out of it, and with that I'm lucky to get 3" groups, but it's cheap for plinking.

Not wolves, a pack of mongrel dogs. Not for the sqeamish either. But shows how a pack, versus a single predator, overwhelms a person pretty quickly.

Do you have a spare tire in your car? Smoke detector in your house? Same idea. Its about being prepared for what might happen, not what you think will happen. - dan

100% agree, and that’s why I always bring a rock climbing helmet when I go in the woods.

Odds on being attacked by wolves....same as scoring with Jennifer Aniston.
Not ruling it out....just sayin is all.

Close friend of mine runs a slasher. He has a wilderness carry permit, specifically for wolves.
He sent a picture of wolf tracks over top his footprints when he walked from his bush trailer to his slasher, along with his application. Ontario CFO had no option but to grant his permit.
Where we are, there are timber wolves.
I had a similar experience with a bear when i was hunting as a kid.
I was extremely cautious for the rest of the hunt, and have made a point of back checking my trail since.

...snip...

Have you ever heard a cougar scream?
....Snip....

I have to say that it was exactly as described by the old timers, and I knew exactly what it was immediately.

It's a sound that you will never forget...and I wasn't feeling very safe in my tent as I hugged my shotgun for warmth...🤯
