A farmer friend of mine has been losing calves to wolves this past week so we've been out there every day since. Early this morning, while I wasn't there, two came in and were eating at the bait. My buddy waited until they both were inline and took a shot. The farther of the two dropped from what we later found out was a spine shot and the closer one took off. So, we were out there this evening and noticed a bald eagle and a vulture or two hanging around a low spot behind the bait. We decided to take a walk down there to see what the fuss was about, and once we did we found the second wolf. Turns out he killed two wolves with one shot from exactly 140 yards. I was impressed. The second wolf only made it about 125 yards from the bait, but it was in a creek so it may have bedded down in the water. Both wolves were a good size between 80 and 100 pounds and looked to be very healthy, its a shame we have to take them, but the cattle takes priority. Anyways, i thought i'd share. I'll be back out there tommorrow so i'll update this thread if anything exciting happens.

What does your buddy plan to do with the hides? it would be nice to be able to wait until winter but I know how it is and the calves will be bigger and less likely to be taken by wolves then.are they taking full grown cows or just calves? There was a big problem here last year with calves the coyotes would be walking around the cows as they were trying to calve out. Those kind of problems can cost a guy big money in no time.Any how good like on your hunting but we need some pics.

The hides have already been spoken for and one is going to be a full mount. Im hoping to get a hide for myself, but we'll see about that. They've only been going after the calves and so far they've killed 3 and injured a fourth. In total we've got three, but there are definately more in the area. I'll work on the pics.

Just imagine how hard they are on the Moose poulation and Deer if they have done that much to your friend's calves! They are dong a great job of wiping out the Elk here in the west. There has been a huge drop in the Elk herds just in recent years.

Looking forward to the pics.

Wish they would start eating those "Wild Horses"! I think we are going to have to do something about the dogs come Feb Noel.

Hmmmmmm, how do you train wolves?

Well, they operate on the same principle as a dog, so I'm sure you can do it!! LOL

I'm a big fan of wolves, because of their "pack" nature, and how it relates to dogs (do lots of dog stuff), but I understand the need for protecting the cattle etc.

Is the wolf population out there getting bigger? or are they just finding easy pickins' on the cattle?

I really have no idea as to how the population is doing around these parts, but i've been told that this particular pack is bigger than normal and between 13-15 wolves. The area around the farm is loaded with white tail deer so i imagine that is why this pack is thriving. I guess a newborn calf is just a lot more convienent than trying to take down a deer. As a bit of an update i was out there this morning and the owner was out there this evening, but there was no activity....maybe they got the message.

I think The Wolf population is starting to grow in Ontario. There are a lot more wolves near my hunt camp. When i was bear hunting last weekend wolves ate 4 cans of wet dog food and some other bait. I didnt see any wolves but i seen all the tracks at the bait pile and some scat around. Right before dark when i was leaving I could hear atleast 3 wolves howling at each other. Last time we've seen a wolf up there was almsot 10 years ago during moose hunting, my dad shot one of the alphas I think, they howled all that night and we never saw anymore since.

I cannot offer hard numbers either but we are hearing more about them every year. I would speculate there is getting to be enough of them out in the park that there may not be enough to sustain them there.
Speaking with a Ranch hand yesterday, they are having constant problems with wolves killing their steers and ran clean one up in one single nights feed.
He has shot ten+ so far and is looking forward to having me drag Jarrod out to let a couple volleys go. His biggest one shot so far was 120 lbs.
