Has anyone ever gone for a good wolf hunt in northern bc/north of Prince George?
What caliber did you use to ethically take down?
Did you bait?
Tree stand?
What rifle?
What kind of optic?
What time of year?

They are similar to coyote in many ways except that they are bigger and more solitary comparatively.

I like the 17 hmr for pelt preservation but you must be close range. Otherwise 300 win mag works well

Anything you would use on a deer will be fine for wolf. They are in about the same size class but wolves seem a bit tougher. A smaller calibre would be better for the pelt. I would not be comfortable using a .17 but some of the guys who are really into it do and do quite well. I used a .270 win with a 3-9x40 optic and it worked well. We hunted from a ground blind near a cut block and some still hunting. We had no success still hunting though. I've only tried hunting wolf the last couple years so im interested to hear what some of the veterans here use. What ive used worked but im sure it isnt the best.

No one can tell how to hunt wolves in one or two sentences, or one or two paragraphs!
In short, they are the hardest of all our wild animals to hunt. But first, we have to distinguish what kind of wolves we're going to hunt. By what kind I mean are they a true wild, wilderness wolf that has had no association with people. Hunters very seldom get, or ever see, this type of wolf and when they do it is by pure chance. Many of you on here will know that I was involved in the great wolf poisoning program of the 1950s, in BC. Large chunks of frozen meat, would be poisoned and dropped on frozen lakes. It may sit there for two weeks, in prime wolf country and none would come to it. A similar bait on another similar lake may be cleaned up in two days.
Garbage dump wolves, ones who have learned to feed on what humans leave are stupid, with none of the fine traits credited to wild, wilderness wolves. There are very few garbage dumps in the bush now, but at one time they were common, left over from every winter operation bush camp, etc. These wolves aren't afraid of people and will come right out in plain sight.
If I lived on the edge of government land in an area, like the OP mentions, I would start now making a dump, for getting wolves next winter. A dumb, stupid garbage dump wolf mounted in your den, looks just like a real wolf!

Depends, sometimes they can be among the easiest. Luck plays a role here.;)

My stepdad shot a lot of wolfs by tying a dog in heat to the ice
Him and his hunting partner would then lay a tarp and blankets out and cover up with a sheet
But I don't think live bait would go over well today Haahaa

I watched a show once were the Wolves did that to sled dogs (used a wolf in heat to pick the dogs off). Smart animals, if the movie is right lol

I have heard stories like that

I went on one hunt wen I was a kid but we hunted on cross country skis
The trapper he sat up on a hill with a old 6.5 Swedish Mauser
He lent me a nother 6.5 swed My job was to chase the Wolfs past him
It was fast I think I mite have seen one but not positive well chasing them
I was so winded that Evan if I did see a Wolfe I would not bin able hit it
The trapper I was hunting with got two but he a exceptional Hunter
I am assuming ther was a carcass dump nearby that's how he knew ther wear wolfs there but can't say for sheer as I was just a kid

My addition to the thread. Wolves have a 10 to 20 km range and even if you did find tracks a few days old you could wait there weeks till they come back through there. Some times they are within a kilometer behind my place howling at night and then I wouldn't hear them again for a month. They are smart because they will not stop at a known range from my rest. I knew 500 and 700 yards and it laid down at 830 yards and my shot impacted in front of it by a bit.
Peace River Alberta has packs of wolves up to 20 animals. Talk to the helicopter pilots. They sometimes share the location.
Know anyone who butchers chickens? Great wolf bait in some provinces. Read the regs.

I would think if your after wolfs the best way is to go get road kill moose or deer and put it along a lake all winter let wolfs get use to going to your bait pile there is a risk to this bears will not hibernate if there is lots of food around so becarfull
I would be putting out bait around December and start hunting in January leaving plenty of bait for 4 to 6 weeks as well as a bit of wolf urine to seal the deal
this is how wolf trapper do it and it will work for you to

Just north of Prince George between mcbride I've been finding lots of moose carcasses. I've talked to friends that live in cabins on a lake full time around there and their saying they've seen a pack of wolves about 10-15 ! Around this area they go out in a helicopter and annihilate these wolves and do nothing with them so id like to take a few myself. I'm thinking a .300 cause we're going to use bait and there has been bears in the area with the warm winters

like Carverk mentioned taking a dog in heat with you seems to attract a lot of attention ......... just go well armed , with friends and have a safe place that your dog can hide in . ( ie cab of truck ) .

I ran into this last spring with my girl ( she had just started going into heat) while checking out some placer claims . we ended up cutting our day short and going back to the truck because of several wolves following us about 200 yards away .

Wolves rarely stand still for long and can go a loooooooong ways with a marginal shot. For wolves I'd want a .243 at least. I would shoot a wolf if I had a .223 in my hands but for a dedicated Wolf rifle I think .260rem would fit the bill nicely. For scope a good 4-12x40 would be my choice. Late fall or early winter would be best time to target them for prime pelts
