Wolf Hunting

Here is a pic of a wolf I shot this spring near Grande Cache, AB. Will be spending more time this winter to get one worth getting a rug made out of.:D

My guess is that most wolves are taken by chance encounter. Does anyone actually hunt wolves. I imagine going out targeting them would be pretty challenging.

There are definately people that hunt them, just like coyotes... You're essentially going out calling.

(I mean, I know people who bait FOR wolves, but one of them recently got charged with "using dead stock as bait" to the tune of $8000 in fines... you can't bait wolves successfully using table scraps IMHO, cuz they eat like horses - or better yet, they eat horses! nuk, nuk, nuk :D ) They're biologically adapted to eating 50 lbs of meat at a time, and then not eating for days at a time.

in the areas of ontario where "development" meets bush, there are wolves and coyotes, but generally more coyotes because the wolves aren't into developed areas that much. Coyotes thrive on that "border area of development and bush. In rural ontario, if you want to go calling, (my .02): you go to an area likely to hold wolves or coyotes, then you start looking for tracks... If there are lots of coyote tracks, there are likely no wolves...same deal with fox.

there are a couple good sites on the subject. Google "predator hunt canada" (It's the best site on the internet:D :D after CGN of course:p :p :dancingbanana: ) and join up to read.

cheers to you.

when a pack of half a dozen wolves can do this to a deer in a couple hours, you know its time to get out there and hunt predators in the winter in your deer hunting spots ;)

I shot another wolf, my first, in 2000, but have no pics. Just a pic of the head on the wall. nice black male, heard him howling while on a pack in goat hunt, moved towards his location and spotted him 600 yards out, stalked to 100 yards and shot him with a 308.

Anyone here hunt wolves? If so where and post pics if you have 'em.

I have thought about hunting them in the winter here in Ontario. I'll see if time and money permit before Christmas.
make sure you check the regulations for the area you plan on hunting them

I was deer hunting west of Rocky Mountain House and saw some wolves chasing some white-tails. I did some fawn distress calls (Eastman's deer talk call) and these two came running to me. Used mu Sav. 99 in .300 sav. to get em both.

a pretty exciting experience.

Duffy: Those wolves are absolutely gorgeous ! :D

That had to have been a terrific adrenalin rush.

(FWIW, I got mine SW of Caroline. To answer scott r's question, I used a .223 (Tikka Tactical))
