Wolf Hunting

Powderburner, excellent taxidurmy, that wolf is the thing a child's nightmare is made of! But beautiful too. What a giant of a wolf.

Neo, is that rifle in the first picture a small child's rifle or are those really BIG wolves?

Great photos. I really gotta make the effort to get out and hunt some wolves. Do both you guys use calls or just wait and watch?

I think theres some miscommunication somewhere, I was commenting on the size of A zones wolf. It is not my wolf.

A-Zone and NEO, were you guys hunting with Chad?
The pic of the pipe line the cats are crossing looks very familiar.

You bet. :D

He put a lot of effort into helping it all come together. My first time hunting with an outfitter, Chad was very diligent and made the trip very memorable.

hey NEO, was that picture taken in Lac la Biche?

No it wasn't. As A-Zone mentioned, it was a hunt put together by Chad Lenz of Savage Encounters near Caroline, AB.

If anyone is looking for a good chance at an Alberta wolf, I can't recommend Chad highly enough. A-Zone and I hunted with him for 4 days, and between us we saw 13 wolves as I recall.

Even Chad admitted we had phenomenally good luck, however. On average, Chad's experience is that it takes about 6 man-days per wolf sighting, and about 12 man-days per wolf harvest. When you consider that the wolf is arguably one of the three or four most challenging animals to hunt in North America, those are still remarkably good odds.

Truly, that hunt is one of my fondest memories.

and what do they taste like lol i have been thinking of hunting wolf for a little while but am curious if i would like the taste of the meat

It is delicious. I think that is what Gatehouse bbq'd for all CGN members attending Haggisfest 06! :)

I heard a couple of this year's attendees were disabled with explosive bowel problems, that would explain it I guess... ;)

Anyone know where is good to hunt wolves not too far from the "golden horshoe" area? WMU 48 I thought until all of it was excepted, practically. I wanted a place sort of near Algonquin and away from the Billions (it seems like) of cottages which can confuse anyone as to who owns what. Definately do not want to trespass.

My father has a farm up by Arthur area about 45 min north of guelph. there are more and more coyotes moving in and lots of the farmers dont mind if you hunt them. My Father in law is near the Lindsay area and there are lots of farmers out there begging to have someone go out and shoot some wolves/ coyotes for them. I remember seeing an add in the paper asking for somone to come out if they like to hunt them. If you want to hunt for them, all you have to do is go and ask.

You are gonna have to travel a bit if you are serious about hunting wolves. I dont hunt them hardly at all, but from being in the bush hunting the other critters I can tell you from the wolf sign I see, they move A LOT!.

Most areas around the park have some stupid regs on wolf hunting, not worth wating your time trying to find a place there. Spend your time gong a little further north. There are areas in WMU48 that are open to wolf hunting but you are better off getting to WMU41. Loads of wolves and almost all crown land. WMU 29 around Shining tree is another good spot.

A long weekend in shining tree sometime in march would be a relatively inexpensive way to give it a try. Stay at Shillings camp and bring your skidoo.
