Working mans double

Would it be possible to cut a slit where the firing pin drag on the action of the brls( if I said it right). Would be easier than removing metal from the lug area and reworking. I find the Sabatti ou feels more like a 20g ou in the 9.3x74. With 286g and imr 4350 should be able to get 2350fps and maybe even 2400 with top load

Shaping the plank into a stock, never worked birch before learned a couple things. It’s much more comfortable to shoot for me, now.

I never would have thought that such a nicely shaped stock was hiding inside that thing Baikal puts on there. Looking good!

I should probably make a real stock for it at some point, as I’m really enjoying this affordable little .30-06 double. But that project can wait for winter if I’m still interested in it then, wanted to get it shooting more comfortably and started hacking at the birch dog leg. I stained the birch with coffee as I don’t have real stain available, fortunately I have a bit of tung oil left it’ll get the first coat of that tomorrow.

The baikal I had was pretty rough. 30/06 sxs, the previous owner had treated it well and done some trigger work but it was still shotgun quality to put it nicely. It shot fairly well though.

I moved it along pretty quickly, too good to be true at that price range. I'll shell out for an over under double in an intermediate caliber some day.

I dunno, this is a real double, in a really useful chambering, that even shoots alright. I’m very much of a fan, the .45-70 didn’t do it for me but this does. Even beside rather upscaled competition.

Angus when you get tired of that one I’ll take it off your hands. Take down feature is nice for riding around with you at work!

Yeah not for me, I got for the takedown reason. I realized I couldn't carry it at work anyways because it always has rounds chambered. For close range and basically all hunting I've come to prefer a short bolt action rifle. Hopefully BwanaDave enjoys the one I traded him for the double lol!

For my use for a backpack rifle I'd rather shell out 1.5x what people are asking for them on the e.e for a kiplauff.

I used to own a really cheap mossberg sxs shotgun, I always liked the way it looked and carried. Then I tried a beretta silver pigeon...

Haven't tried the silver pigeon of rifles yet but I'm betting it points and handles a lot better than the baikal.

A wise old sage I once worked with told me when you pick up a double rifle it should sing to you, the only song I heard with the baikal was elmer fudd's theme.

Not to mention I bought a turkish over under with battue sights around the same time and I could shoot it better offhand at 50m than the double.

Different strokes though, I just don't think it was what I was looking for in a double rifle.

Fair enough, most of that was almost certainly stock fit, the factory stock is to put it very kindly abhorrent. Within a certain reasonable range of weight and balance, just about any gun can be made to fit. and sing. I definitely know what you mean about a singing gun.

When I first picked up the Baikals I had the same feeling as you, sights didn’t go where I looked, comb slapped me in the cheek as it was far too high and far too thick. With an afternoon’s reshape she doesn’t even feel like this same rifle, she sings now. ;)

I get the chambered rounds as well having carried a double rifle for work a lot guiding. It’s the one place I prefer a rimless chambering in a double or single. I carry it broken, over my shoulder with the two rounds in it. They are locked in place by the extractors, so the safety is snapping it shut and pointing it. Funny to prefer a rimless double, but it’s safer for our uses. I never put it on a pack was always carried by hand in the Grizz rivers, so I understand it wouldn’t strap to a pack broken and chambered.

This one now points and handles beautifully with about 2hrs of reshaping.

Yeah I have to say I was into the mechanism of the rifle itself, very cool idea to mass produce a double rifle that can be regulated by hand.

I really wish the extractors were a bit beefier, you can slip them if you try hard enough. A quick reload was out of the question with mine but wasn't really a big concern.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the material the rib is constructed from yet..

It looks good, just needs a red pad. Are you taking gun #### pics in O&G camp lol?

Not an O&G camp but close enough ;) Good way to kill a slow day, making stocks and tweaking. The stamped ribs I actually think look pretty good, all considered, not easy to make something reasonably tight fitting that allows the barrels to move still. ;) Sure beats the open barrels other adjustable designs have used, to my personal tastes.

Always wanted a fast double, hornady superformance 150s, good for 3000ft-lbs.

3000+ ft/lb is a pretty handy rig... surprisingly good looking gun too.

Hi Conner, I am and figured out your light strike problem pretty quick- headspace caused by a funky chambering reamer shoulder angle.

Ran a hundred new privi cases with 10 grains of unique, a toilet paper wad and red river cereal through it to fireform the cases to the chamber, milled down the cocking piece surface that controls the pin protrusion to.065 and replaced the dremeled firing pin , some stone work and polish on the bolt and it shoots a 286 privi with 59.0 RL 15 to about 2430 fps and consistently less than an inch at 100 meters and runs slick as snot.
(actually closer to a consistent .75") Which makes me very happy as I now have my CZ 550 9.3x62 running 286 partitions @2525 fps with the NECG aperture sight and aftermarket front blade for a boat gun and a scoped x62 for those days I want to go hunting with one.

As a note I sold the other one off too (45/70) as It just didn't really set my balls ablaze either and while Ive killed some critters with a 45/70 before, I found in comparison to a 30-06, 7mag,300 mag they just aren't quick killers and in my opinion inferior to the 30-06 with a 180 which kills better than most folks admit. I don't think there will be any more doubles in my future either as I much prefer any of my tikka's with a woodleigh or oryx up the spout to the baikal for hunting.

Looks good, like it should have come that way from the factory.

Can the chamber be correct or would it have to be set back? Sorry you're stuck with the wonky brass for that one.

Sounds like you can't complain about the accuracy though. An un-named non sponsor store in DC did a great job on that rifle in terms of bedding and changing the LOP and pad.

I think I need to get a 9.3x62 tikka battue. Moving down south closer to your end.

Hey Connor
Its fine and I'm more than happy with it. The bedding job you had done was first rate, it fits me really well and its a great little rifle. I'm not getting rid of it so the whole brass thing doesn't bother me at all and I get good hard primer strikes every time. I just won't set the shoulder back from here in when resizing and run separate brass for it which I do with all my rifles anyways. I might be the only guy with a X62 improved chamber on here!

Thanks for the insights guys. I live vicariously through posts like this. A double is a step up that (unless Serendipity shines on me)...I'm reluctant to take. I've played with a few singles; Schneider-Enfield, Martini, Ruger No. 1, Rolling blocks, Savage and such.
Doubles are just an extravagance that I never can seem to afford sadly.
Kinda like Harleys... Honda's do the same thing...with much less Panache sadly.
But it is enjoyable to read about.
