I have a S&W 19-5 K-frame .357 with a bent and bulged barrel (squib incident when lent to a friend). The bulge is half-way and it's bent downwards at that point. The friend has reimbursed me for the cost I paid for the revolver so no issues there. My question is if it's worth trying to get it rebarrelled or not. From what I've read online, removing a crush-fit barrel requires some special action vice blocks and barrel vice blocks specific to the frame and barrel profiles and trying to jurry rig something often leads to a bent/warped/cracked frame. There's also the issue of sourcing a new barrel. Does anyone know of a gunsmith in Canada who stocks S&W crush-fit barrels? Or a gunsmith in Canada who does this work? Online most posts I read are from the US and they say to just mail it to S&W's gunsmith shop as their prices aren't terrible and you know it'll be done right. Being in Canada that isn't really an option for me.
If it'll cost more than $300, I'm likely to just stick it in the back of my safe for the rest of eternity and buy a new .357. I didn't pay too much for the revolver as it is. I kind of assume that'll be the case but figured I'd ask and see if anyone else had done this.
