Out of the 2 choices given, I would choose the Cherokee(I am asssuming an XJ, 1991 or newer). The S-series GM products in stock form are weak for off-roading. Tons of aftermarket off-road stuff for the XJ, not so much for the Envoy. If you need more cargo space, you can get a 1/4 ton utility trailer. I used to pull one behind my CJ-5, that combo could go places my F250 could only dream about.
JEEP HANDS DOWN! I don't know why too question. Envoys were built for ONE purpose only: to go to the mall during a sprinkle of rain! Cheerokees (of course the 70's were best) were built on the old "JEEP" reliabilty and can handle more of the "off-road" adventures!
"ITS A JEEP THING" GET THE JEEP!
