Would you hunt with a handgun?

Good to hear I am not alone lol. For now I would just hunt small game, but large game is not out of the question. My ideal set up would be my .303 for deer/elk/moose and a .22 or hell a 9mm pistol for grouse.

How many times have I been deer hunting and wished I had a .22 handgun for grouse and rabbit? Many.

How many deer have I shot with a 30.06 that I could have just as easily used my .357 Blackhawk? Many.

To each his own BUT consider this tidbit of big brotherism:

In the UK the Deer Act of 1963 banned taking of deer with arrows. Later on it was the Wildlife and Countryside act of 1981 that specifically banned bowhunting there. I myself think there are alot of common factors, between handgun hunting and archery hunting, too common to ignore, in the cold light of day. Both require considerable training and adherance to restrictive ranges unlike 'high powered' rifles. I'm sure there are those, in the UK, that over a generation of brainwashing, think that archery hunting of big game is a moral no-no, and believe that only high powered rifles, are adequate enough, for this task. But, in North America this is a given in every jurisdiction I can think of, that hold a big game season. (archery, for big game, etc) Now put this in the context of handgun hunting, and one comes up with the same conclusion. It can be done, it just requires those fellas in the ivory tower to concur. One only has to look at our southern neighbors, in specific states. There are some of us here, lucky enough to have done this, recently in the USA.

Handgun hunting seems like an obvious place to push forward.....makes no sense to me why a hunter can't carry a sidearm legaly?

I might. I don't think there is a humanitarian issue if done right. Same as bow. Get within bow range, <20m, and shoot. The only problem that I see is safety issues with people pointing a short barrel revolver all over the bush. I suspect the people that would cause this problem cause similar problems in all their endeavors in live though.

As opposed to pointing a long barrel rifle at the bush? Or what is it you are trying to say here, you've lost me?

The only thing that stops me from buying a handgun is that I can't use it hunting.

sad to say but it's pretty much the same for me. The range would be fun once in a while but taking a walk in search of bunnies etc. without hauling around a rifle would be my main reason for owning handguns.

You know, when all you really want is to take a walk in the bush but almost need a gun in case you see something, ergo .22 or 9mm for grouse and bunnies. The day they legalize hunting with handguns I'll get go out and buy a couple asap, until then it's gonna have to wait until I have time and money to spare.

If legal, I don't think I'd go anywhere without something on my belt. Many, many times I've been shooting gophers way out with a 9+ power scope when one pops up six or seven paces away. A .22 pistol would be great for these instances as well as the odd grouse while tryint to fill a deer tag.

I also think that a .357/.44/.45/10mm/etc would make a great tool when working through think brush.

if we were permitted to hunt with handguns in Canada i would probably use them more than any other type of firearm. It would nicely fill the gap between archery and rifles. Far more challenging than a rifle. X 2 on the real world use for a 500 s@w. HELL YES!!!!!!!!

I would if I could. I think handgun hunting would be similar to bow hunting in that you need to get quite close to the animal. It would be challenging, that's for sure.

yea i agree! that would make things interesting! too bad we cant nor will likely ever be able to though...
