Would you pin FH on ar-15 to take to USA?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of going to multiple competitions in the US, and just general plinking as I have dual status. But my ar-15 (CC IUR) has a 15.7" barrel that is considered a SBR in the US. The only way I could bring it would be by pinning the FH to the barrel permanently. I don't really want to ruin re-sale but I'd really like to bring my ar-15 with me, I really really really really want to open carry with it and show off the Colt Canada at the range. What would you do? Pin the CC FH and be done with? Or get another upper w/ 16" barrel?

I had a CC 15.7 and regretedly sold it. I'll more than likely be getting the new MMR. I would never pin a FH on one of those. Just get a diff and cheaper lower and have at it.

I wouldn't pin it, I would buy a new upper personally.
Also doesn't the importing guns to the USA go by your reg certificate? In which case in Canada pinning the FH doesn't count as a longer barrel like it does there so it would still say 15.7 on your certificate.
I've never gone through the process so I don't know for sure but that might be something to look into if you wanted to go that route.

They are ok with permanently attached muzzle devices giving the legal OAL. They do not care what part is muzzle device or what part is barrel as long as its total length is over 16" (bolt closed, dowel inserted in bore and measured = length). I may have to clarify with the ATF, but it's legal in the US I don't see why it wouldn't be legal to import one like that.

i get what you're saying about wanting to show your Colt Canada off in the States, but I wouldn't ruin it with pinning the FH on. I'd get another upper to use in the US.

Form6 nia is a little lax.....also depends on the guy who look at the form too.

I have seen cz858 and vz58 being approved

Couldn't you pin and spot weld tha FH on just like the XCR's come from factory? Essentially only Having to grind off the FH around the pin to remove it, doing no damage to the barrel? Sort of semi permanent ?

The issue is you need to drill into the barrel to set the pin. If ATF or CBP check it and it fails your looking at potentially federal NFA charges due to having a untaxed unregistered short barreled rifle.

In other words not worth the risks.

Drill it, pin it, weld it and shoot it ( or rather get an actual gunsmith to do it so as to deflect blame to a subcontractor). If done right you can't tell it was done. I would say almost any competition is worth it.
And you can always turn down and remove a butchered flash hider with a lathe so as to replace it with an unblemished one or swap a barrel.
