WS-MCR - Ongoing Impressions

Ran another 600 rounds through mine since the review, including running it in a large 3 gun match. Ran it with Cross mags.

The AR retaining pin worked great.
The gas block screws walked, so I'm going to use some high temp permatex loctite stuff to seal those in.

Try Rocksett on the screws

I have stripped mine and made videos for my site.

Here are things that will be interchangeable:
Barrel note: must be carbine gas length regardless of barrel length
Barrel nut
Handguard note:some will not work do to gas block clearance
Pistol grip note:there is no safety detent spring
Buffer tube
Castle nut
Locking ring
Buttstock
Fire control group note:some cartridge types will not because of bolt open lever clearance
Magazine catch and button

Parts that are not interchangeable:
Bolts
Bolt carrier group
Recoil springs
Bolt catch
Safety
Hammer pin
Trigger pin

Here is the bolt catch and longer hammer pin

Here is the safety spring and safety assembly which is tied into the bolt catch assembly. The safety has a square end and grove for the spring. Totally different from an AR15

Wondering why the gas system has to be Carbine length only ?

RWA used to make rifle length piston rods for use with the WK and their own Nodak and WK compatible uppers with rifle length gas systems. Although they are no longer building the uppers, they are making WK parts, and their WK bolt release works on the MCR. They may be able to fab a rifle length piston rod if they don't have one in stock already.

Who has these rifles in stock?

Good question.

It seems that the guys making these must have a very small manufacturing capacity.
If they can't get more rifles out the door; It won't matter if they're slightly better than the Kodiak rifles.

Everyone will buy a Kodiak rifle; Simply because they're the only ones available.

Thanks,

I think I would hold out for the MCR. I compared the two side by side at the range on the weekend. The finish on the MCR is superior, and the aesthetics are much nicer.

Just received my MCR the other day and it looks far different from most of the WS-MCR's I've seen in that I cannot move the charging handle to the right side. The right side has the ejection port, but is solid metal behind it. Is this a change in design recently?

Yes, this is a recent design change. A long time ago, on their forum, Wolverine asked what the community's preference was regarding the charging handle and ejection setup, regarding a permanent change to the side panel. The consensus was that most people use the charging handle on the left side, while they prefer having it eject on the right side. To simplify manufacturing and reduce the amount of open space on the side of the receiver, they've changed the side panels to include only the charging handle slot on the left side, and the ejection port on the right. The bolt carrier should still have a socket on either side for the charging handle, so in theory you could have your own right side charging/ejection panel fabricated, placed in the dovetailing, and screwed in, or request that Wolverine/Spectre do the same for a charge.

I've been shooting mine a lot and was much happier with it once I threw on an LPVO, changed the grip out, polished the trigger, changed the stock etc etc but I made the mistake of moving some stuff around today. I had my SBRs (AK and VZ) out and comparing the mobility, size and length made me want to cry.

It's great for what it is but really I just miss my ARs and VZs.

I've got about 1,000 rounds down the pipe now and the rifle has definitely grown on me but I'm painfully aware of what it isn't... so I'm really trying to make that mental shift and stop that kind of thinking.

I recommend this thing to everyone that has the funds and misses their ARs.

Yesterday the mail was busy with both a WS-MCR and a couple of SBI sets showing up. Put some parts together and viola! One straight pull bolty and a semi auto. Both with Magpul stocks and A2 pistol grips, both look terrifying to liberals. The rest of them differ somewhat. :)

I'll give first impressions tomorrow, when I shoot it. :)

Put just over 100 rounds through it today. It will see another 100 tomorrow and be up to about 500 by the end of the month. So far, so good. It's heavier than I really want but there is pretty much no recoil. I plan on swapping the roll pin out for a cotter pin when I get a minute. Didn't test accuracy on paper but with a red dot and Federal bulk box ammo I can hit a 6" gong at 100 yards no problem- which is all I really need to do with it anyway.
