Very nice rifle indeed! ....... What does that weigh as shown?

I haven't weighed it all together, but I think it will be in the low 7's.

I had everything lined up to build one two years ago. The donor, dies, brass, bullets, the barrel ordered and paid for. After six month the sponsor smith (who's no longer a sponsor) still hadn't received my barrel and couldn't give an eta. He offered me a refund and I took it. By then I had bought my .375 Ruger Alaskan which filled the role of short barrel thumper. Still like the idea of the .458x2" in a short bolt action. One day maybe.

I remember. I think we talked about 458x2 vs 450marlin.

Do you simply trim a 2.5 inch magnum case of any headstamp to 2 inches with a case trimmer and size it in the 450 Marlin dies?

Did you decide on the 458x2 over the marlin because of the brass avaliability? Would it be possible to use brass from a 2.5 inch magnum that has been shot out?

Basically yes. Some brass apparently can be a bit thick when cut down but the majority is fine. I read a article on the 458x2" when I was a kid, and wanted to build one since. But yes it's very close to the marlin, but uses the common magnum belt. My brass is all cut down 458 wm brass.

Oh and I cut my brass off with the lathe a few thou over 2" and final trimmed with a case trimmer.

Fantastic double gun.

Hopefully the usual cast of characters won't turn this into a silly bear defense thread or a silly CRF vs PF for bear defense rifles thread and keep it about your excellent work.

Well, they're only black bears so there's no reason to be afraid of using a PF rifle.

WOW very cool rifle/cartridge combo...

On my 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS (stainless black/gray laminate) in 375RUM I went with Leupold QRW bases and rings the bases do not over hang the action.

When the scope is off I install a XS Sights rear tall Weaver backup ghost ring sight this system gives me cloverleaf 50 yard 3 shot groups.

Beautiful Rifle Josh! Way to go! I wish I had half the metal working skills you do! Can't wait to see a range report.

Thanks Lane. I'm finally realizing it's the build that I enjoy much more than the finished product. Most of my builds the last couple years were for the fun of building, and to make the project last longer I started making more accessories for them.

I will most likely pull this apart and build something else on it or sell it as I inherited a ruger #1 in 45-70 that fills the same need and has a lot of history important to me.

Do it. You aren't getting any younger - build it while you can enjoy it.

True, but does anyone truly "enjoy" a 505 Gibbs? If I showed up in the deer woods here with that beast the True Fudds would wet themselves. The only thing that would freak them out more would be a Modern Hunter.
