Not sure where this should go, so i thought i would start out here and let the mods figure it out. Just thinking about xchanges of opportunities is all. For instance, i live on probably the best walleye/northern pike lake in the world and i know it well. Figure maybe i could offer gps tracks or guided trips in xchange for maybe upland hunting or varmint or whatever or more diff fishing. What are the thoughts out there and please feel free to move to whatever forum you feel is most appropriate mods, and maybe even a sticky would be good.

Been down this road multiple times - what you are suggesting is technically illegal in most jurisdictions.

I don't want to argue about it, yes it is kind of silly, but that is the way the laws are worded - no trading hunts.

Better to find someone and ask if you can join them then offer to take them out on your end. But no "exchange", "trade" or "bartering" unless it is between licensed guides.

Cheers.

ooops sorry about that. so many things i think should be so normal and ¥´t so verbotten. What a great world we live in.

I have no idea in hell why it would be illegal I am not interested in fishing but can show you some good upland and varmint hunting. There are many sites on the web offering to exchange hunts. You can hunt anywhere you want in Canada in season and with a licence.PM me.

Not entirely true.

In the Yukon if you want to hunt big game you need a Special Guide licence which entitles you to take out a Canadian resident every 3 years. For small game I believe you can just buy a NR licence over the counter.

There is a fellow here who is awaiting trial for some major charges. Apparently he was advertising "swap hunts" over on AO and last year F&W got wind of this and decided to fly a helicopter into his hunting camp.

Left some Alberta guys standing with their dicks in their hands while they siezed all the guns and ATV's.

Seems this guy was bringing up 3-4 guys every year on swapped hunts. He was even trying to start a website promoting it.

This guy has a notorious reputation of killing things illegally.

Not the smartest guy to advertise on the internet.:D

You're kidding right? I can't shoot a stinking coyote in Alberta without a hunter host or guide. Zero for big game without one of those. Nobody but a resident can shoot a coyote in Sask at all.
Good luck without a guide for big game just about anywhere.
You can play around with rodents, pests and birds a bit in other provinces, but unguided big game for non residents mostly doesn't happen.

Nothing illegal at all about what you are proposing, redryder, as long as folks involved are aware of and comply with all of the licensing and guiding restrictions and regulations, which vary widely from province to province.

Hunting exchanges are fine. Easier to do intra-proviancially but its not reason not to bring it up and discuss. E.G. I would trade a black bear hunt vs. A Turkey or Whitetail deer hunt. Not a big deal really.

Ontario - Quebec is fairly easy....I would just have to pay the non-resident tag fee. Not as easy if coming from quebec to Hunt in Ontario.

Even in quebec, do not try to go hunt reindeer (caribou) without a guide, its technically allowed but local wont let you.

Similar problem for salmon fishing, most salmon rivers are "owned/rented" by organization that make you pay an arm and a leg for a 1 day trip. We got rip off of our land a long time ago...

The joke is, a permit for fishing salmon during a whole year is only about 45$, try to use it... The nearest river not covered by a mendatory guide service is closed to fishing this year.

As some have added, the issue with your "exchange of sporting opportunities" is that there is "consideration" involved: my hunt for your hunt.

As I said, I do not want to argue about this, and regardless of how everyone "personally feels" about this, the fact remains that you may start discussing something that is technically illegal.

Does it happen? All the time I am sure. Is it a huge problem? No, probably not. Is it illegal? Yes, the way it has been worded, it is.

Do not offer to trade, exchange, barter hunting opportunities (at least for big game). Period.

But, feel free to ask if someone is willing to take you hunting in their province. Then you can feel free to invite them to yours. Just remember that if either hunting opportunity is contingent on the other, then your are TECHNICALLY violating the game laws of your province - at least BC and AB, I can not say 100% for anywhere else.

I take non-residents out hunting in AB every year, and am more then happy to do it. But it is not because they are going to - or are even willing to - take me hunting in their province.

Again, I am just pointing out that any discussion of trading, etc. hunting opportunities is technically illegal, and as such is against the board rules, as far as I understand them.

Don't shoot the messenger, and feel free to do whatever the hell you want, but AO received a lot of heat about that Yukon crap. No one needs that kind of attention.

Peace.

PS. Dogleg, if you want to hunt farther west I could probably take you next year, or this year if you are interested in upland birds.

Redryder:

I can't tell by your info where you reside but call Alberta F&W for up todate info. According to 2009 regs.Non res Canadian and non res alien require no guide for bird game and can use a hunter host for big game. Call fish and wildlife.----Cowboy
