Hey Guys.

I am finally getting my XCR to the range in the AM, but I am confused at the breakin procedure. The manual states 40 rounds at a gas setting of 4, but every post I have read states 3-4 hundred. Did the older rifles require a more thorough break in then the FAST stock rifles?

Thats kinda strange i bought my XCR a year ago. It says ".. setting "4"... as many as 200 rounds..."

I did 100 rounds then I was good to go on setting "1"
 
If your manual says 40, then 40 rounds will break it in. Robinson Arms designed, the gun, and wrote that manual. They know better than anyone on an internet forum.
 
Try on 1 first. It may not need the extra pressure. I'd start on one and if it's good - it's good. If not go up untill it runs smooth. It is best to run it set as low as it will cycle reliably. There will be no harm done by starting low, worst case a few miss feeds and maybe a damages cartridge or two.

Do this^^. I typically start on setting 2 - 3.

Run it on the lowest setting that it will take without a frustrating amount of FTE. Even Wolverine has come forward saying the same. The manual is to cover Rob arms butt in the case that someone will run low pressure ammo and then complain about the rifle not operating properly.
 
Yes, the older ones had you fire off two hundred rounds at the setting with the strongest gas return.
They must have lowered the norm down a bit.
If anything can go wrong, it will when it gets all that feedback. Otherwise, you can dial it down and it should work.

By the time I finished mine, I got such a strong gas return, my trigger finger was numb from the strength of the trigger slap!

Follow the manual. 40 it is.
Then you can try a few rounds at three or two and gradually lower the setting to work with the ammo and its' recoil to suit yourself.
 
I did the breakin on 4 then set it to 3 after 20 rounds. It looks like the gas setting effects accuracy as well , I did some load dev for a hunting round set on 3, it shoots into 1" at 100yds,when I set it at 2 the groups opened up. guess it changes the muzzle pressure enough to throw it off.
The next time I get out to shoot I'll check the accuracy of the norinco ammo at different gas setting. has any one tried this ?

Agree I did 10 rounds on 4 and it threw the brass a half mile. 1 worked on mine from that point on.

It most definately will. I chronoed them through out the settings. I do not recall the actual numbers but it was substantial, i believe setting 1 being somewhere around 260fps faster than 4. I'm thinking 2790 ish as opposed to 3050fps.

I did start mine on 4 for a mag or two, then 3 for a mag or 2, then 2 for a mag or two then 1, where it remained for the next 5000 ish rounds. Other than the day I chronoed the various settings.
 
Glad to hear these guns seem to be sorted out. I bought one of the first ones in Canada and it was a serious lemon.

I am leaning towards buying another.

This is what I did today too. Rifle ran like a champ. No FTE or FTF on the Norc ammo. I was amazed at the trigger slap on 4.

One thing that was brought to my attention....and I cannot believe I never noticed it earlier, was the misalignment of the upper and lowers on the left side. Is this normal?

I bought my XCR L from Wolverine Supplies and they told me this about the break in which makes more sense:
please do not run at Gas setting 4, I know the manual says so, but I strongly disagree. This will cause an unnecessary strain on all components.
Gas setting should be at a setting that just makes the rifle operate normally.
