I'm a girl, new here and I need help. Please :)

My boyfriend just got his restricted PAL and is going to buy his first handgun, an XD .40

I was thinking that I should get him something to go along with it.. kinda as a surprise. He's on here ALOT, but he doesn't know this is me asking.

Does anyone have suggestions about what I could get him?

Thanks!!

I dont have my pal YET.....

I know I would need it in order to purchase ammo, but I thought perhaps I could get accessories easily enough without it.
Another reason I need advice? :)

A reloading kit for pistol ammo. He will be able to shoot more for less $$$.

Some of the ideas listed here are not what I would suggest:

a) ammo - too much hassle re PAL, etc

b) reloading stuff - we don't know if he's into reloading, it's pricey to get the whole thing, if you only get bits, they are useless until you get the whole thing, bad idea

c) night sights - they don't really add any usefullness to the gun, they are more of a nifty, cutsie thing to run around in a dark basement with. If you've got everything already, sure, but not at the start when you are just starting to get into guns/shooting. There are a LOT of good, basic things which actually add to the functionality.

d) more mags - a nice idea, BUT again, having 4 mags instead of 2 doesn't really make any difference, does it? It might for ipsc, but then again there are other things which you can get which would also help with ipsc/idpa which are fun and add new ability to his gun play immediately, not just after joining ipsc (see below).

What I would recommend is this (this is based on the assumption that he wants to get into action shooting with that gun):

1) good shooting belt - CR Speed is, in my experience, the best.

2) magazine pouches - CR Speed Versas are great

both of the above you can get from the ipsc store, they are in Oakville, you can mail order: http://www.ipsc.org/store/store.htm under equipment

Or a nice Dropped-and-Offset-Holster (DOH), from http://www.blade-tech.com/DOH-Dropped-Offset-Holster-pr-824.html - XP 40 is one of the options listed.

I would NOT (!!!!) recommend a speed/race holster, they are only useful once you get really good, and only in a small percentage of stages. Good mag pouches, good DOH holster, and a good belt are faar more valuable, more affortable, and you don't need any licences/etc to get them or gunsmithing to get them used/installed.

So, are you going to be shooting with him? Remember, IPSC Production division is there all the new action is, hehe, with lots of other girls/Ladies... ;)

It all depends on what he plans to use the gun for.. is it just for the range? or for IPSC/competition shooting.

if it's just for the range, then you may want to get him something like a good pair of ear protection (electronic) or glasses.. also a speed loader for the mags
Maybe a nice range bag to carry all the gear in.

if he's into IPSC then there are extra magazines, a holster, belt

you can check out some sites like www.shop.xd-hs2000.com for ideas for gear

Hey, he's got a girlfriend who will go out and buy him gun stuff as a gift and suprise him! What more does he need, he's already got it made!!

Oh, and good on you, get your pal and go shooting together, you'll have a blast.

That being said, a good holster if you have a club that allows them. A good quality pistol cleaning kit is nice to have too. (Not a cheap aluminum rod, stainless or brass, good quality bronze brush, fitted patches and a .40 jag, a bottle of shooters choice bore cleaner)

glasses are highly personal and dependent on the person's face size/shape. I'd stay away from that (and please, don't even try to tell me that something like that can fit you great no matter what your face is like). Something that fits you like a glove might be merely ok for someone else, and annoying and painful for someone else still.

Thanks! you've been a great help!!
(not saying stop if anyone else has more ideas of course...)

From everything I've read I'm kind of steering towards the more general items. He hasn't ordered his gun yet and he's been through a couple different models already. I wouldn't want to get something ordered, thinking I'm being smart and proactive, to have him decide on a different unit.

The DOH Holsters you mentioned, they are definitely going to be unit specific aren't they? Guess I could always wait til he excitedly tells me what he orders and then order mine in 'rush'... lol

I'd say he's probably going to be shooting mostly range. We were out checking one out today actually...

I liked the idea of clear lense glasses for an indoor range, but then you're definitely right about ordering in something that personal. Although I like to think I understand his tastes, I wouldn't presume to guess his headsize over internet pictures of glasses.

k, enough yappin from me...:D

i would wait till he gets his gun first for specific things....

but i would get him some cleaning supplies and stuff...

Well the first question everyone should ask is how much do you want to spend?

If you can tell us your limits, the guys on this board can easily come up with a list of NICE goodies in that price range that you can buy without a PAL. :)

Musky Hunter: But wouldn't he probably order that when he orders his gun? I'm assuming none of his rife or shotgun supplies will do

Beltfed: I wouldn't bother with a gift certificate from our ONE gun shop. They are crazy overpriced from what he tells me.

HKfan: I was hoping to spend in the range of $50. I wouldn't want to go as high as $100 unless it was a super kick ass deal that would put a massive smile on his face and warrant some serious lovin afterwards hehe
p.s. AWESOME Snatch quote!! :)

Morgayne,

Thanks. Snatch is my all time favourite movie. :)

There are a couple of things that you can get at around the $50-60 mark that should bring a smile to his face. That said, gun accessories can be a very personal thing as people own guns for different reasons, and use their guns in a certain way (e.g. some guys would like to take their XD to the range and just shoot at a stationary target. Others would like to get a holster, tac light and run around shooting at targets!)

If it was me, the FIRST thing I would want is night sights. Meprolights are excellent, and you can get them at most dealers. However, you will find that the best prices are to be found online, such as ebay. If you poke around you should find a set for around $60. The only problem with night sights is that you may need to find someone to put them on for you if you cannot do so yourself.

Otherwise, I would get him a nice holster. Fobus are the cheapest ($25ish), Bladetech are great but a bit more expensive. IMHO a holster is always a safe option, and is a good practical present as well as being one of those "it's the thought that counts" presents.

Otherwise I would say ammo or some extra mags. If you do not want it, maybe you can place an order for some ammo at a shop near by and have them issue a receipt for a "mystery gift" which he can then think about before going to the shop to solve the mystery.

Good luck! I am sure that he will appreciate anything you give him, and after all it is the thought that counts. :)

The blade tech are the better of the two holsters, but due to festivities currently occuring in the more easterly regions, there is something in the lines of a six week wait. I have a fobus for my xd and like it, a good deal for the money. (some don't like them and have finish wear problems)

The shooting glasses idea is a good one, but the fit/comfort issue is there.

I still vote for a good set of pistol cleaning equipment, and a gift certificate that you draw up and give him for a case of ammo. That way he's not stuck going to the local rip-off mart.

You really aren't going to go wrong giving him any of this stuff, he'll be thrilled. Mag pouches are always handy, and its nice to have at least three mags for a pistol (one more than they ship with).
