Getting that installed properly is a full day's job. (well, maybe with a long lunch ;) ) But if there is any re-profiling of the butt stock (most likely) then there is refinishing to consider.
I would be quite surprised if you got away under $500.00

But it sure is a nice looking piece. pics when you get it done? :)

Definitely not less then that if you are looking for a quality Job which includes all slit screw heads line up.

Cheers

Ralf Martini would probably do that for you. I can't estimate his cost though. There are others as well.

I'm thinking that getting the trap installed on a replacement stock made from a blank may be a cheaper option than retrofitting it to an existing stock.

Wayne Doucett here in N.S. does nice work. You likely seen his table at Truro show.
Stu MacKenzie should have his ##

he does awesome work, I have seen a few of the stock he made when I was Oskar's place, Wayne is also finishing the stock for my Lee Speed rifle. there is a thread on CGN in the gunsmithing section called "Wayne Doucett" there is posts of people praising his work and I posted some pics for Oskar of rifles Wayne made the stocks for

Does anyone have an idea what it might cost to have a buttstock cartridge trap installed?

Can anyone recommend a qualified (good woodworking skills) gunsmith?

I have the cartridge trap, in vg condition, smooth spring, nicely engraved with a Capercaillie at the centre, complete with the brass plate and all six unmolested screws. (see photos...The last two photos are of a similar trap on another of my rifles, just to show approximately what needs to be done.)

Fitting that to an existing stock would be challenging. The profile of the stock is likely to be very different. Much easier to blend it in when you're starting from scratch.

The gunsmiths (incl. several of those recommended above) that I have talked to about this have all declined ("too busy") but have given me an approx. cost of $400.- $500. Looks like I'll be doing it myself. Time to sharpen the chisels.

Yes, that is a job best done before the final shaping of the stock... not many would take that on as an after fit... if it does not end up perfect money is wasted and the end product has less value.

Dave Jennings did one for me and performed an excellent job! cost was $200, however that was about 10 years ago. Dave is now retired, but his son, Shaun has taken over the business. He is located out of Prichard, B.C.
