yet another AK type stock on a VZ

I was thinking I might buy a carbine-length VZ, wait for the NEA folder, and throw my vltor tube and CTR on that. That means taking them off my non-restricted model, leaving it stockless. But obviously I can't bolt that damn canoe paddle back on...for one it's too low, and for another it looks ###.

What to do...why not smack an AK-type stock together?

I took some scrap plywood and laminated it together to get the thickness I wanted, then cut it to shape with a hand saw. Then I took it for a quick spin on the belt sander for a bit of shaping.

I took a long 1/2" bit and drilled the hole for the factory screw with a cordless. Then I enlarged the hole from the back end with a 3/4" spade bit to fit the head and washers.

here is is mocked up next to the gun:

Then I cleaned the whole thing up a bit, and filled voids with a mix of epoxy and sawdust, of which there was lots. I then coated the whole thing in epoxy and heated it for a bit to help the epoxy soak in to the wood.

Finally a quick sand and a spray with truck bed liner...total cost...maybe $5?

I don't go for pretty guns...or maybe I just find "effective" pretty.

Great job.

I have to admit though, I was kinda skeptical after seeing the first pic as the wood looked like it was gnawed on by a beaver. :D

You pulled it off with the last pic though. Looks great! Are you going to install sling hardware?

I don't know if its just me but I think it looked great before you painted it black. I can't see the voids that you mentioned but if you could have smoothed it all out it would look excellent. All in all. Great job.

It did have some surprisingly nice warm wood tones once it was epoxied. But I didn't do nearly a nice enough job to make it pretty. This was just a slam-it-together brute force kind of operation.

But if you wanted to do it nicely, it could sure be done, no question about it. It was a nice rich looking laminate at one point...although it was just fir plywood, really.

I have an Ak stock right now I am trying to convert. I have the hole drilled but I don't have a bit long enough to widen the hole for the bolt head and washer. Can you post a pic of the bit you used and where you got it from?

The plywood is most appropriate for an AK lookalike.
AK's are known for being made of "lumber".
No fancy-shmancy European walnut here!

It was a bosch spade bit, 3/4x16", about $10 at home depot. This is the bit:

Although the shaft is obviously a lot longer than in that pic.

I forgot to check the thread again for this info. Thanks! this will really help. I will find out if I can make it work or not. 16" long sounds like it will work. I kept getting the drill stuck in the cleaning kit area because my bit was too short. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks
