So as many of you were aware - last year the Ontario MNR reluctantly moved some woodland caribou off Michipicoten Island as it was pretty obvious they were going to be exterminated by the wolves which had moved out to the island 4 or 5 years ago. This was covered extensively in the thread "Yet another example of beaurocratic politically correct idiocy":

At lunch the other day, a local First Nations member told us that the wolves were starving and that commercial fisherman had been hired to provide supplemental feed to the wolves on the island (reliability unknown). He also said that they were going to move some wolves off the island - well that part seems to be confirmed!

So now they are going to transfer 3-6 "STARVING" wolves that fattened up on caribou across the lake in order to fatten up on American moose. f:P:

PS - I spelled bureaucratic correctly in my post :)

My neighbor who is a retired biologist and one of the folks spearheading last years efforts to save the caribou confirmed today that the wolves on the island have been supplementary fed in order to ensure they are healthy enough to be transferred....

I guess they shouldn't have eaten all of the caribou on the island....

So last week the MNR flew another 1200 lbs of food - chicken parts - to feed the wolves on the island by helicopter. A pilot told the head of the local trappers association they have been flying out chicken parts and bags of dog food.

The planned transfer of wolves from Michipicoten to Isle Royal purportedly hasn't happened get because Isle Royal is a federal park and the park service and fish and wildlife service have staff were furloughed in the US government shutdown. Will be watching the airport to see if any activity for the next three weeks now that Trump is putting them back to work - for now...

We have a program here , in southern Alberta, where they drop carcasses in remote locations to feed Grizzly bears. It's supposed to diver them from feeding on rancher's cattle.:)

Grizz

It sure is stupid, but not surprising....silly things get done when silly people (our government) make decisions based on silly peoples (groups) input.

They should have went in there at the beginning and took out the wolves.....

Just got this

So has been interesting with a bit of subterfuge on MNR part.

I have been told the first attempts to get the wolves on the island were not too successful - the radio collared wolves which have been net gunned twice refused to come out from treed cover (screw that Martha - remember what happened last time we heard choppers).

So then there was a call to local trappers for beaver carcasses as bait to get them out on the lakes to be easier to net gun. But what the "partners" were not told was the efforts moved to the mainland and they got 2 wolves there and eventually 1 from the island.

Every time I ask about it I get a wall of silence from MNR so I get the information from my neighbour who is plugged in on this one.

LOTS of taxpayer $$ spent on this as 2 MNR helicopters and a twin otter have been at the airport during this project

meanwhile in BC , global news vancouver has been running interviews with some anti hunting group that is lobbying the NDP/Greens and attacking BC sporting goods stores and hunters of wolves, coyotes, cougars and of all things racoons.
Stupid people are really starting to permeate our society in record numbers...... it's really quite sad considering they only ran a quick 20 second blurb on the news when the very last Woodland Caribou breeding female and bull were removed from the Purcell and Selkirk mountain ranges and put into a captive breeding program just a few short weeks ago.
2 bulls remained in the wild to live thier lives alone with the wolves and the industry decimated landscape that has led to thier demise.
These anti hunting special interest groups make me sick.

Well its over. Lots of choppers at the airport last week at the airport. They brought in pros from Bighorn with the Hughes 500 and net gun - they were able to net gun 6 wolves on Michipicoten Island and one 100lb black wolf on the mainland. Of the 6 from the island, 3 were in poor shape. All were transferred to Isle Royal National Park to control the moose population. There are no more planned efforts to relocate wolves from Michipicoten Island.

They dont know (or arent saying) if they got all of the wolves off Michipicoten Island. If there are any left, they will only have a diet of snowshoe hares and beavers as there are no caribou left.

It will take a lot of lobbying to try and reestablish caribou on the island once we know there are no wolves left.

It would be real interesting to find out what this fiasco cost the MNR/tax payer when all was said and done. Typical government though just when you think stupidity has been elevated to it's highest level someone in government will find a way to elevate it even higher. No accountability is one problem.
