I don't have a particular favourite brand. I have Sightron Sllls, Bushnell Elites & Weaver T & V series. I have also owned Leupolds, good scopes but these were traded or sold.
I tend to prefer fine cross hairs with high magnification for bench shooting.
If I were a hunter my choices would be far diff than the items shown above.

I used Swarovski, Zeiss and a very long time ago, Leupold. After conducting much research into optics, I squeezed as much quality from optics for the best price. I concluded my search with Meopta. I now have two Meostar rifle scopes and one set of Meostar binoculars. The quality of these optics are right-up there with the big three, however for only half the price. For my Meopta Meostar B1 10x42 HD binoculars, I paid $1,201(duty,tax and shipping all in),whereas, Swarovski would of cost me at least $2,400 with the same quality.
Japanese made Bushnells are very good products. Much like Vortex, Bushnells high end products are made in Japan and work very well. I have some Elite 4200ās, Elite binoculars and spotter and they are excellent. Unfortunately, most people associate them with their low end, Chinese/Philippine lines.

The Japanese made scopes are usually a higher quality than the Chinese & Korean manufactured product.

Scope brands spec scopes and then outsource manf from a range of factories all over the world.
A factory in China can easily make the same product that is sourced out of Japan... and there are brands doing that right now. QC in fit finish and operation are every bit as good as the Japanese options from the same brand. Same with the Phillipines
So it is less important about WHERE the scope is made vs HOW the scope is speced. I have owned some real Crap that had "made in Japan" on the tube.
I now run optics from Japan, China and the Phillipines (and compare to those from Europe). All have been functionally 100%. The Japanese high end glass is still some of the best on the market but also costs substantially more. The mid priced stuff coming out of China and the Phillipines can really perform vs their price point.
This summer a variety of optics are going to come out of a Chinese factory speced to Japanese high end glass standards. It will be very interesting to see if they pull it off cause if they do, costs to the shooter will drop substantially.

I like vortex. Good prices, quality and the unconditional warranty is really nice.
I bought a spotting scope used and it was not up.to par so I sent it to vortex they sent my a brand new one no question asked love the warranty had a Leopold scope had to send it in for warranty work and wow the papers I had to fill out and question asked was crazy vortex warranty is awesome better then most

I prefer fine cross hairs, I use mine for mostly hunting, as long as they stand up in the field, hold their zero, dont fog up I don't care what brand name is written on it.
I tend to hunt in thick bush so a fixed power is probably best for me but variables are alright left on a low setting.

I started with Vortex Viper, at the 100m range the Viper is not bad, but for hunting at dusk and dawn, it's worst than night glow iron sight, can't see much in low light. Then I got a Leupold VX-R, it outperforms the Viper. For hunting, I strongly recommend Leupold, it does worth the extra money. For target/hunting scope, I use Bushnell DMR II, the glass quality is lacking compared to S&B, but for the price, it's pretty good.
If I get to choose again and have extra cash, I would probably buy a Leupold VX-5 for hunting, and S&B 3-20 for hybrid shooting.
from my experience, hunting scopes under $500 are trash. for target shooting during daytime, you may get away with the inferior scopes.
