Your choice for a CUSTOM caliber in the 6-7mm range... why?

I haven't shot my 264WM in years, but I did use it a lot for whitetail and took it to Texas years ago and it was a long range killing machine. Nowadays I use my 257Wby a lot more. Truth be told though, I could finish out my hunting life with my 243,,,,,,,,,300 Wby........375 H&H without the need for the rest of the room full of rifles.

My .223, .243, 7mm-08 and .308 will do me just fine also... but sliding the 6.5 in there will do me... better! It has nothing to do with "need"... but I don't need to tell that to a guy with a room full of guns. ;)

The winner is... 6.5mm-08 (260 Rem)... going AI straight from the start... it works very well in this platform, and using 120 bullets won't encroach on the case capacity... also, very neat in my line-up; .223, .243, .260, 7mm-08, .308... I love the balance of that. Thanks for all assistance rendered. Cheers and good shooting.

I'd go 6.5x300 win mag on a P17 action, 27" bbl with a nice thumbhole stock and optics to suit.

Yup, that sounds just about right to me.

Why?

I prefer 6.5's to 6's or 7's, 300 win mag brass is commonly available at a reasonable price and of good quality, and the 6.5x300 win mag would give a fellow LOTS of juice without being the crazy barrel burner that the 6.5 RUM is. And it is even cooler than the .264 win mag. Really. :)
