I use a 338 Win Mag/ Rem 700 Stainless Synthetic DM (1996ish) / Bausch and Lomb 2.5 x 10.

Pros- accurate, good hitting power, stainless is nice for damp conditions, 2.5 power handy in the woods, DM very convenient.

Cons- brutal recoil, expensive ammo, heavy rifle.

Got a good deal on it at Reliable Guns many years ago when living in B.C., would likely buy a 300 Win Mag next time.

it's hard to pick a favorite as I use different rifles for different hunts depending what terrain or method I'm using.
My all around rifle for moose and elk though is a Ruger M77 MKII 7mm rem mag with a nikon M3 4-16 x 42Nplex, 160gr Nosler accubond and 174gr nosler accubond long range. Rifle is dressed as it came from the factory but trigger , action truing and stock bedding were done by joe dlask.

Mine is a custom Sako AV Classic with 24" .35 Whelen barrel 1-12" twist. Shoots any 250 grain bullet @ 2500 fps into tiny groups, has reasonable recoil, and is very deadly and decisive. Just to broaden my experience I have used other rifles for recent hunts, but it is predictably reliable and efficient.

Primary Elk rifle: Custom 8mm Rem Mag...220 A-Frames or Woodleighs at 3060, Leupold 3.5-10x40 B&C.
Secondary Moose/Elk; custom 308 Norma Magnum..200 Partitions at 2960, Leupold 3.5-10x40 CDS
Very persuasive on bi8g cervids! :) Dave.

Personally I used a 300winmag for decades as my elk rifle in the mountains, wonderful calibre with true, reach out and kill it capability; very, "sharp" kick compared to the 338 IMHO. I originally went 300 as I figured the 338 might be, "too much"(bought my 300 when 19). Personally after buying a 338 I'd say the opposite. Again, personally, the 300 isn't bad, but it's, "sharp" compared to the 338 if that makes any sense.
As a qualifier, recoil doesn't seem to phase me much but a 300 target shooting can make my shoulder sore if you don't hold it right, "once" where the 338 and stuff like my 450 marlin doesn't seem to ever have that effect.
Could be just me, too, or maybe I'm just getting old.

Deer, Elk, Moose all wind up in my freezer with my trusty old 308. Have been told by a few folks you can't hunt elk or moose unless you have a magnum and I just nod and listen then go out and fill my tags.
