Your favourite optics and why

On hunting rifles I'm completely satisfied with Leupold VX2 & 3 level scopes, and my binos are Minox 8.5-43 HG. I had a Nightforce NSX but it got traded away with the 338 Lapua it was mounted on, and I do not miss it. Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome scope, but I just don't have a spot for such an item, with where my shooting interests are at the current time(they sure seem to change).

I like the G2 Razors. Knock on wood but I have 3 of them and they have always been good. Not the best but good value. At the high end I have a 5x25 Tangent Theta and while its great I am not sure it is worth 2.5 x the price. I also have Leupold MK5, Elcan, Athlons and a few others to compare to.

I agree 100 percent despite the Vortex bashers. I had two and still have one that Ill keep. Theyre built like tanks but very heavy which is why I ended up getting two Kahles optics. A 318i and a525i which i absolutely love. I think lots of time its when you have a failure you become a hater or just want to jump on the Bashing Bandwagon of whatever is the new target. Id be real curious to know how many post negative remarks on optics theyve never owned, but not likely anyone will admit it. Have you looked thru the Gen111 HD, well its a big step up from our gen11s in every way!!

Never owned a vortex, and never will. They are just not for my eyes. In the beginning when starting out I looked at them, thru them and always chose others. My biggest pet peeve is when the sales counter people push them like they are the cats meow, only to get the sales kickbacks from them???. But that last statement maybe be not true, I have never sold them, it just seems like they get a kick back the way they push them. The razor line, but soooo heavy for what they are, theres always is a better choice.

Sure great, they have a warranty, but nothing worse than having to wait, or buy a temp replacement while you await a warranty claim. Almost always happens around hunting season, and no one gets them back in time, and always scrambles for a temp scope to continue the hunting. Just hear too many of the crapped out stories to even suggest someone go this route and buy one.

But hey, it is a free world, and I know I'll never have to compete with you to buy the vortex deals, cuz I don't even look at them anymore.

Well once more a basher who openly admits to never having owned one and has a trader rating of(Wait for it) ONE. Yet this same individual assumes its going to fail just before hunting season even though(Wait for it) has never owned one. I had no idea we had The Amazing Krezkin on this site that can forsee the future and whats going to happen. Unlike most I can speak from experience of owning more than 20 different Vortex optics. I have never had to get a warranty claim. I Will also admit that Ive never owned any of the Lower models. The cheapest Vortex scope I owned was a Diamondback Tactical. Just an FYI but no one make sales commission on selling Vortex scopes or any other good optic. The prices are set and cannot be put on sale or lowered with it being Nationwide and approved.

My favorite scopes are the VX-R, VX5 and VX6 Leupolds, I love the firedot versions for low light. The weights are good, the glass is good, auto shut off/motion on the firedot, alumina covers are all in the plus category.

What I choke on these days is the value of some of these scopes. In what world is a 3-18 VX6 worth almost $3k? You can get a VX 3HD firedot 3.5-10 for ~$1k, I fail to see how 3 of these = 1 VX6

The VX5 3-15 is probably the best value in those lines right now, @ $1600ish, yet the 4-20 (on a 34mm tube) is almost double that.

LOL Longstud; I never figured a trader rating had anything to do with using optics, or not using optics, but I guess in your world the more you buy and sell other irrelevant items, the better opinion you can have on a forum. Classic.

I stated above the reason I have never owned one, and again never will, because every time I go to purchase a scope and put it side by side with others, the optic clarity is not up to par, and choose the other. Not because I have not wanted to, but they just seem less, maybe just to my eyes, but I see what I see. I had the same with Redfield.

Percieved failing........ what are you on about???? The stories you hear, is what I was referring to.

I will end there, as this is a open forum, and sometimes there is just no point to continue!

Hunting guns, Bushnell, Leupold, Burris, Weaver and Redfield. Have had good luck with all of them. Have also had a few failures. Have had/have a few Pentax and Nikon, Kahles/Zeiss and a couple others euro scopes. Not enough to really form a good opinion. Heavier bench and varmint guns, Leupold, Burris, Bushnell, SWFA, Springfield Armory (1st gens were great scopes), Zeiss, Sightron, Bausch & Lombe, old Tascos. I guess the most failures I have had is with Bushnell. FWIW - dan

Seen enuf of other long distance shooters thier vortex scope seemingly out of zero although not used much of the summer.
Meh

No I only judge things by owning them. I can see you making comparisons on optics while standing in Cabelas or Canadian tire or whatever store you apparently make the comparisons. Noticed you didnt comment on the commissioned sales cuz you dont know what you speak of. The opiniuon I have is from experience and not STORIES!!! Yeah and best to quit when you know not of what you spew forth but go by STORIES.

Lol, cuz I don't know what I speak of? Great. You have had over 20, so I would peg you as a retailer, or someone close to one that has easy access to vortex, maybe better than retail $$, cuz that is the only way I see someone having owned that many of them, and actually talk about it. The only reason I didn't mention sales, well, I had to go, I had things to do, but have been awaiting your gracious return here, so I can continue..........., and here you are!

I have been in sales, and managed a store for a number of years, granted electronics, but the same in the end, for P&L. We always had manufacturers incentives to sell their products, and I feel Vortex is set up that way. Or the separate retailers give their sales staff incentives for selling them, as I can only speculate that they have a good profit margin on them. I see no other reason that they are pushed first, and always to make the sale. It was always easy to sway someone into buying said product to the general public, with greater and direct sales incentives in my pocket. 80% or more walk in and have no clue, and rely on the sales staff to point them into the right direction. Easy to do, and easy to point someone into buying vortex. Great sales points. Lower cost, lots of features, and, the greater no questions asked warranty. Easy peasy sale to 80% walk in traffic that are not versed or spend the time to learn about them, and just want an optic.

Well at least we know there will be no direct competition between us on buying Vortex, so go ahead and buy more. See, I judge things before I buy them, so I have no regrets after buying and owning them. Its too late after you have spent the money. I have experienced friends with them, so while still a story, it is still a little more direct than just hearing about it on a forum. Always the same. "I wish I had bought a better one" "I can always sell this one", "or give it to someone else", or "pass it down to my kids to use".

By the way, no one here was bashing them, just talking about experiences with them, so no reason to get up in arms over them. That's great that you own them, and like them. I'm on the hunt for another optic for longer range shooting on a 22lr, and vortex has come up. Granted the razor line, but those scopes are heavier than gold, and again I can get into optics with the same features, that weight less, have a smaller footprint, for close to or less than that razor in $$, so again vortex will not grace my rifle cabinet. But I will try another brand that I have not owned before, and have no problem doing that. I'm not always stuck to one brand, I shop by features, and cost, and usually in that order.

How often do you use other brands, so you can compare them to the vortex?

Well since youve asked Ill tell you. I have optics from Bushnell, Kahles,Zeiss,ZCO,Minox,Vortex,Leica,Leupold and Sightron. Plus all the others Ive used in almost 50 years of shooting. I do know what I speak and shoot almost daily. I dont go by stories. I go by real world experience. Try it and you may find an opinion of your own instead of just storyland!! Ive also shot competitively for many years and have rarely seen optics be the cause of poor performance. I could tell your a salesman LOL

Geez...how many threads are you two going to derail? Get a room :adult:

Alright then, back to the topic of this thread.

Over time my preference in optics has generally been Leupold or Leupold made Redfields, Vari-c II, III, VX-I, II & III, VX2 & 3, or Revolution.
Mainly for legendary warranty, but (knock on wood) never had to use it.
Unlike the Bushnell products I started with decades ago, all but one of them crapped the bed at many wrong moments, hence why I switched to Leupold and never looked back.
The one and only Bushnell that still holds well was made in Japan. Still works very well. A much older high contrast Trophy model 3-9x40.

I’ve been slowly getting away from the standard duplex reticle, and have shifted towards the Redfield Accurange or Leupold’s S.A.B.R reticle (fairly similar), mainly for hunting purposes. Found these reticles to be very fast with target acquisitions, just put target in middle of circle and squeeze, target falls down, doesn’t move.
The Bullet drop compensation points are great also when reaching out there.

That has been my cup of Joe so far.

HAHAHA, I was just thinking the same thing reading their posts, then I get to the end and you posted it. "Swordfight on..."
Well if the two of you aren’t use to members not in agreement on a particular subject I suggest not participating. It’s a regular occurrence unless you don’t have an opinion worth fighting for. I don’t like people speaking about things they have no experience or hands on data!! If that’s a problem I’m not really concerned from either your opinions. Maybe the two of you should get a room together?

Whatever man, you have a history of crapping in everyones threads if someone 'dares' to disagree with you. You seem to think you are the smartest guy in every thread you grace with your presence. The OP asked for opinions on your favorute optic, not for you to argue ad nauseam with people who don't agree with your opinion. Welcome to my ignore list...:welcome:
