What stocks have you used, what were you doing with them, and which one was your personal favorite?

That really depends on what you needed or wanted the stock to do. Some need a heavier stock to help balance a rifle, some want a simple stock that locks up a little stronger, others want a stock with storage or a comfortable cheek rest.

I agree that "best" is pretty application-specific.

when I stated best, I guess was looking for something like : had STOCK1 on my ###XX, found it was GRIEF HERE because FEATURE was SHORT/LONG/TALL/FAT. Switched to STOCK2 because I liked FEATURE and found SECOND FEATURE to work better.

If that's the case, your thread title sucks. There is no "best" of anything, its all personal preference based on experience(or not) and application. To answer your revised question. Most any aftermarket stock from the majors is a step up from the stock six position. You need to select your gear based on an intended purpose/role.

LMT SOPMOD & Vltor E-Mod.

+1...LMT SOPMOD predominates...current 'go to unit', Noveske has the E-Mod.
Although when I go down and look at the units on the wall, I realize that I've got just about every stock mentioned so far in this thread..
As noted....personal preference is the 'driver on this bus'......

Wow...that would sure give you a lot of information that would not be applicable to your specific application.

Here is a hint: different stocks are good for different things. What are you going to do with your stock? THAT will determine what is best for you.

I have used both the six position stock and switched it out to a MagPul CTR. It's on an M4 platform and it is rock solid. I prefer the CTR as there is no wobble and it suits my needs nicely, especially when wearing tactical vests doing drills at the range. I keep it on position 2, I like it short so I can square up properly to my targets. The fit, feel and looks make the CTR perfect for my needs.

I like CTR and UBR.

^This

The UBR works well on carbines with full rail.

The CTR on the shorty...

+1 for the "no wobble" aspect of the CTR. I've played with much more expensive stocks that I've been far less impressed with.

I've used all kinds but by far my favorite is the Magpul MOE... It's simple, it works, its light weight and does NOT have a locking mechanism. Ideally, it would wobble a little less.

I will say that I would avoid stocks with locking mechs like the Magpul CTR. I've have personally seen the CTR and others break on at least dozen occasions when having to "mortar" an AR-15. While it's rarely necessary, they just seem to break. When they do break the stock generally collapses in on your fingers (which breaks them), the locking mechanism then gets jammed in the locked position OR it totally breaks and get stuck in the locked position.

Sometimes you can rip the stock off (which is very painful when your fingers are all stuck in between the charging handle, stock, and lower receiver/sling plate). Other times you literally have to wait while the stock's locking mechanism gets cut off before the stock can be released to free your fingers.

That said, If I didn't run my guns "tactically" I wouldn't worry about it as I'd probably never mortar my gun to clear a nasty jam.

I ditched my A2 stock off my shorty m-14 with Troy rail chassis ( read heavy stock) for a Troy Battle Axe stock. The storage is a nice feature, but I got it mainly for a more positive cheek weld. I find it functions well is this roll. Although, on my setup, a heavier butt stock would probably be a better match as my rifle is very muzzle heavy. I may experiment with adding weight in the extra storage space to see if it will balance out better.

I've just heard of the one instance where that video that was posted, but it's not clear exactly what the issue was as it happened out of frame (could have been a commercial stock on a mil-spec tube, etc.) I'm not sure how the addition of a locking mechanism on the CTR over the standard MOE would make it more prone to breakage?

Ran a Magpul MOE, worked fine and did the job. I went to a CTR just to try out the Friciton lock feature.

I'd prefer the CTR as it really locks the stock down tight, and takes a lot of play out of the gun. Also has a QD mount where the MOE doesnt. Id say both cover the needs of most applications. I think Magpul anything is a solid choice when picking a stock. VLTOR's are great too.
