Planning another rifle but this time for the youngster. He has started using my 222 this year and loves it. Would like to move him up to a more suitable deer cartridge.

If the Browning X-Bolt Micro Midas came in 250 savage I think my search would be over. One option is to buy the 22-250 version and have it rebarreled, but that seems like a waste.

I think the 250 would be a great intermediate step before the 7mm-08 and would like a nice youth sized bolt action with an appropriate sized action.

Any suggestions? Maybe a mini Mauser action to base a custom? Is there a factory rifle that doesn't break the bank that would fill the need?

Regards, Bill

Rem model 7 re-barrelled ? Will your .222 shoot the Barnes X bullets ? In Ontario I don't think there is a caliber restriction[just centerfire for deer] I loaded 24gr /Win 748 and Hornady old style with cannalure /55gr SP for years for my Dad.... Ont WT and he shot one every year with no losses. As well 3 black bear. Broadside lung shots you have a target like a volleyball......Harold

How about a Ruger American Compact and re barrel it to the 250.
It would be a great rifle. Pick up the 7-08 and swap it to the 250 and then change the bbl back when the time is right.
Or just pick up the 243 and way you go.
It's to bad they don't chamber the compact in 6.5 creedmoor and then you would not have change anything.
Another idea would be some reduced loads for the 7-08 to get things started.

Savage did a small run of model 114s in 250 Savage recently. I think most of the NA bolt action companies have at one time or another but again in small runs and they are rare. But failing that you're looking at a build as indicated in the title yet you see it a waste to rebarrel a 22-250 which is by far the easiest route so I think you're back to square 1 looking for a hen's tooth. Or of course a model 99 lever which there's quite a few of them around.

Look for a used ruger ultralight in 250-3000. What a sweetheart of a rifle!

This would be my choice as well ..I have shot one in 22 250. For years and love it..If I find one first I will be all over it or one in 260 ...seems to get my attention. Dutch

If I'm not mistaken Cooper offers a model in 250 savage. With the price of a gun a new barrel and gunsmithing it might not be much more to get a nice rifle that will have value if you were to upgrade

I understand the 243 statement and its merits, but I want a smaller case, larger bullet. But not full bore 7 or 30 cal. Also have a sweet spot for the little quarter bore. Already have a 243 in the house anyway, but not in a youth size.

I didn't see a youth sized cooper in 250, maybe I missed it.

Have a 243, looking for a smaller case, slightly larger bullet. A step between a 222 and the 243.

I don't get that train of thought. The 243 and 250 are so close in everything that to discount one over the other makes no sense. I like 25cals a lot. My 257Roberts is perfect for deer hunting, but I am also realistic enough to see the obvious benefits of the 243 for your needs.

Ok, I WANT a 250-3000 (250 Savage) in a bolt action youth sized rifle for my boy, and yes, for me to play with load development and testing. You do make sense SC, as does anyone when they recommend a 30-06 for all NA hunting. However I find that very boring.

Would like blued steel and wood as well. Lol

If I was to stick to pure logical choices I would only own maybe 3 rifles and call it a day. Thankfully I don't have to, and hopefully neither will my son!!

An original Savage model 1920 would be very neat but they aren't very scope friendly from what I've read and the 1:14 twist isn't great either. Neat little light weight rifles with a Mauser style action. If a guy could find one that had been d&t'd or something and didn't have much collector value it might make an interesting build.

That pretty much has got to be the line of thinking that saw the 250 Savage flounder while the 243 win skyrocket in sales when it came out. More speed and a crap load of marketing helped the cause and the 243 shut down the 250. Its still a neat little cartridge in a gun nut kind of way :)

I'd rather have a 250 over a 243 as well. I'm just sayin' the practical choice.
