Starting with the 20 gauge and extra lite loads is good, with lots of potential for the future, into waterfowl loads etc., as the youngster can handle them.
You made a wise decision. You're child will learn well with a 20. Heavier 3 inch non toxic loads abound should he/she choose to try and kill a duck in the near future. Leave the 28 gauge to the skeet shooters, experienced shotgunners and southern gentleman quail huntersWell I presented my son wth the small pump 20g and he was stoked.
He had no problem shoulding it and pumping it. He will get better and stronger as time goes on which will make it even easier.
Next step is to load some 3/4 oz 20g shells and see how he likes it.
