Youtube video S&W 50 + scope = ouch!

Wow... a couple inches down and to the side.. and this guy loses an eye.

It says that he had the scope professionally mounted, and that the shop offered him a $100 gift certificate. Ouch. Insult to injury. Hopefully he is friends with the shop owner  .

I wonder if the scope was actually mounted in a shoddy manner, or if it was more the screws that were used. They seem to be saying the screws broke.

Never seen this happen, but I did see a guy at PoCo punch a scope ring shaped gash into his face by putting eye right up to the scope when shooting a Tikka in .300 Win. Mag. That was a big bloody mess. They called an ambulance for him. Fortunately I don't believe he suffered permanent injury though. The gentleman was apparantly not an experienced hunter .

Years ago a buddy of mine took a shot with my Parker Hale .308 Norma Mag and suffered a similar injury. I told him to hang on to it but I guess he didn't. Anyway, the scope came back, broke the frame of his glasses, opened up a half moon cresent on his eyebrow and broke the screws on the rear mount. That kinda' ended his interest in 'shooting'.

can happen. I had a wild west guns scout mount installed mid barrel on a 45-70 Guide Gun (barrel was drilled & tapped). After about 50 rounds ( hot but below max) the whole mount & scope assembly fell off.

Debated going to larger screws for a while then finally went to an external XS scout mount when it became available.

I have seen a few 'scopings' in my time and prevented a few also...ouch! A great way to turn a new shooter sour on the sport if you are not careful

Yeah, I took the G/f out shooting one and she tried the our Parker Hale 30-06 because she wanted to. I told her to hold on to it tightly but I guess she didn't hold it tightly enough.. scope came back and hit her glasses didn't break anything just left a little bruise on her nose. She doesn't like that gun anymore but still comes and shoots.

Viewed this video and a couple of the others there in the big .50 S&W wheelie... I have no aversion to recoil but I couldn't help but wonder what's a practical application for such a behemoth?

I have one, actually I picked it in your 'neck of the woods', Island Outfitters. Justifying a practical application?? Sort of like climbing Everest. Why would would anyone in their right mind want to do that, and for what practical purpose? Because it's there. Use of the .500 S&W, having roughly three times the power of the .44 Mag would shine in a hunting application on big game, where allowed.
Mark Hampton of The American Handgunner in his article To Africa With A .500 S&W gives a good indication of what the cartridge is capeable of.
I've been looking into the possibility of a Moose hunt in Alaska with the .500 S&W. It isn't the easiest thing in the world to handle but a set of custom grips I've 'modified' helps keep the recoil manageable. And accuracy, no complaints there.

Yes Officer, I Need This Hand Cannon

Well, the "practical application" for many different handguns is debatable, given the "range only" rules around restricteds. I've shot the 500 a couple of times (people who have them tend to be very generous with the crowds who gather 'round when the Bad Boy is brought out) and have found it to be surprisingly well balanced and manageable. Why do I have a Redhawk .44Mag? Because it's big and stainless and still affordable with reloading :)

I've no particular want/need for a .500 Smith but would be interested to drop the hammer on one round just to say I did... Been the .44 Mag route myself in the past... Left all that behind when I acquired my first .41 Magnum S&W wheelie about 15 or so years ago, though.

The same reason that somebody would buy a Mustang GT instead of a 4 cylinder KIA, you don't really need the power of the GT and they will both do the legal speed limit. ;) And I just bought the 500 S&W that was in the EE here just over a week ago.:D
