I recently acquired this this rifle second hand and it came with unopened Weaver 55 and 20A bases which I believe are the recommended bases for for commercial Mauser actions.

I wend to mount them the other night and noticed that the screws in the rear base protrude a mil to long into the bolt are to the point that the bolt wont go in unless the screws are loosened so much that the base is loose.
Obviously I don't want to remove the bolt every time to clean the bore or inspect an obstruction.

I swapped the screws for the front base and they work but only engage a couple of rotations and one of the rear screws in the front base wont seat fully.

Secondly it seems that the rear and front base don't sit flush in line with each other.

With me holding the square flush with the rear base.

With a square sitting across both bases.
If anyone could shed some light on this for me I would be greatly appreciative as I bought this for deer season and am hoping to get out weekend after next.
I had just assumed that the bases fit no problem so didn't mount them until last night.

They're not great pictures, just hoping someone with more experience can offer some advice.

As far as screws go I have seen this before. It was on Browning BAR with Leopold bases. We just grounded them down and made them fit.

Would think it is pretty normal for screws not to fit length wise on all firearms so nothing to worry there.

The common bases for Large Ring Mausers are #45 and #46 and I never got a problem with those (have several Zastava with them on).
The height difference between the front and rear bridge is 4.5mm.

You often have to grind the rear bridge screws so the bolt moves freely.

That's great, I'll try the 45 and 46 then so, thanks for the advic.
Anyone know of a one piece base available for these rifles?

I noticed recently that Corwin arms has a base/rings set specifically for the zastavas, might be worth checking out.

Check Leupold and other for the FN Mauser, they are the same actions. Leupold # for the one piece is STD-FN 49988 and is pretty common.

The 45 & 46 combination are slightly taller than the other combo of bases. This results in slightly more clearance between your bolt and the Octal bell on your scope. This is a good thing. Go with the 45 & 46 bases if you go with Weaver

Could only find a silver 45 base so ended up going with a set of Leupold 2 piece base and mounts, still slightly higher at the rear but the gunsmith said that it was negligible.

Thanks for all the advice.
