OK, I keep seeing the same thing over and over....people buy them, say they never mounted them/or mounted for a few shots and then want to sell them. So, I assume they are seeing something bad in the optic( which they don't notice initially) ...There are just too many with the same story...
So what gives? excessive ca?

Not sure where you've noticed that, they're a popular scope and therefore turn up on the EE a lot, like Leupold.
The only optic I read about quite a bit in regard to service is Vortex.
to which I suspect is a situation resultant from people not 'caring' for their somewhat cheaper optics and then having to take advantage of the no fault warranty they come with and then those that get them service, spouting the praise of how easy it was.

it would be interesting to look through the very best the likes of Vortex and Leupold to see how they stack up against the best of Kowa, Zeiss, Leica, Swaro and Nikon. Nikon's EDG and EDG 2 are breathtaking. I've never had any other pair of bino's do that to me.

I'm not sure how one would go about "not caring" for their scope. If it fails after being mounted properly, it's crap.

I think it has more to do with people buying something and then realizing they need the money for something else. Lots of "as new in box" guns on the EE as well, not really specific to any manufacturer. Impulse buys perhaps.

I've handled them in the store, but I know I don't have the money so I don't whip out my Visa then list it on the EE when I realize I can't afford it. I did that a little in my 20's and learned the hard way not to. I also wish I had done it when I had a BLR in 358Win in my hands but thought I should be prudent. HA! Under $400 for a BLR and I passed on it, oh well live and learn...I was gun shy(pun intended) because I had recently bought something I shouldn't have and couldn't afford.

The only thing I've heard(read on the internet) about the Conquest HD5 and noticed while handling them in the store is that the ocular bell is quite large and may have issue with bolt handle clearance on some 2 lug bolts, which would mean higher rings, which would mean spending more money after the fact, which could also give a poorer cheek weld. This could explain why they took it home mounted it then put it back in the box and sold it. But that's just internet hearsay.

Nothing bad about my HD5. (Only mounting issues)

As said, people need $$$$ sometimes and a scope is easy to off load. Not a large item to ship.

I missed my luck on a nice deal of a target scope. Greatest part on the dealer very little on mine. So i bragged enough to have an incredible discount on a Zeiss HD5 5-25 with Rapid Z 800 reticle.

I took it , mount it and bring it to the range. That reticle is really nice but too big for target shooting. It can possibly be usable on big games at distance. Very clear and tracks well but...

Owning such a fine piece of optic can be a goal or a dream and it can makes us doing mistakes when you reach the moment ?

How many tactical shooters are reselling their FFP scopes because the reticle is becomming too fat to shoot small targets at distance ?

I know someone who sold his once beloved Swaro because...

Yes , the reticle was inapropriate to the new challenges he was facing.

Somebody asked me to find him a 6-24x50 Tactical scopes with exposed turrets to put on a .375 . He wish to have access to his newly installed iron sights ( See-through mounts ). Intended use : long range big game hunting....Budget : $300 . Too bad.

This one is a...gunsmith !

Be aware .

Its because so many of us had faulty Zeiss Conquests and they were exchanged for the HD5's. That was my experience anyway.. and can say that Zeiss has the worst customer service I've ever dealt with....I sold my HD5 as soon as it arrived at my door and bought a Swarovski Z5.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 on my .338 RUM. It has seen a fair number of rounds and has gone on numerous hunting excursions. It has been an absolutely fantastic scope and has taken all the recoil that gun dishes out without ever losing its zero. I can only imagine the HD5 to be as good, if not better. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another - in fact it would be my first choice in a hunting rifle scope.

I have an HD 5-25x50 with the z100 reticle. I chose poorly for my intended use. Otherwise, it is a beauty. The clarity is great. I should have bought something different for precision shooting though. (My experience)

X2 I wish I had got target turrets and 34mm tube for Spuhur mounts. I love the clarity just not functional for what I want. Plus I think i want more magnification as I keep mine on 25 when 100m+

I also feel that the reticle is too thick

That is one of the aspects of the scope that I really appreciate with my .338 RUM. Never have come close to giving myself a whack above the eye.

Perhaps for target shooting, but I have seen 3.5 inches of eye relief on a Zeiss as well as a Swarovski totally ruin a good hunt in the mountains.

How? Too much or too little? Or finicky eye box?

I did read on Nathan Foster's sight that he specifically dislikes Zeiss because people get scoped when prone with high recoiling firearms, but that opinion was formed with older models with less eye relief.
