Just purchased a new Tikka T3 chambered in 30-06 to be used for hunting. i think i've narrowed my choices for a scope down to a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50 and a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x50 both are around the $780 mark. comments/suggestions? what would you choose and why? thanks

Funny.. I just heard one of the guys at P&D talking about this with a guy yesterday.. was that you?

If I could remember what he said, I'd repeat it, but he was bang on the money. It just depends what you want you want in a scope...

Can you get a Zeiss Victory Diavari for that kind of money?? That would be my choice. I have Zeiss (Diavari-C's and fixed magnification 1inch German T* scopes) they are better than Leupold. Although Leupold tend to be lighter weight

Leupold.

The quality is probably so close as to be unimportant.

Service, however will be much better with the Leupold, should you ever need it.

You can also have the reticle on the VXIII changed here in Alberta should you wish.

They're both very good; you should be satisfied with either one. I just went through the whole rigamaroll of doing research and asking questions about what scope to buy, as I was going to put down considerable (for me) money on my first expensive scope and I went for a Zeiss (Conquest 4.5x14x56). I think that Leupolds are generally overpriced by a good 15%-20%. I really like Leupolds and from what I hear their service is great, but they need to get over themselves with their prices. The other thing is I know people using Zeiss optics today that were made before the second world war and they're still alive and kicking, and working just fine. I wanted my purchase to be a scope I would have and count on for the rest of my life and, in terms of product longevity, Zeiss seemed to have a rock solid reputation around the world for as long as anyone alive can remember. That was really the major clincher for me.

i have 2 ziess conquests and a vari x3 you wont go wrong whith either but i like my ziess glass beter and i think they will hold up to hard recoil better my 378wby mag makes 70lb of recoil and the prices here atleast are the same sometimes cheaper 4 the ziess

You would likely be happy with either, but the Leupy gets my nod, mostly for their incomparable service, which is not needed a lot, but if it is, becomes critical. Even on one occasion when the failure was my fault, Leupold still repaired it for free. All my hunting iron wears Leupold. Regards, Eagleye.

I have 2 Zeiss diavari scopes, and when comparing them to the conquest you can tell the optics are superior. I also have 3 Leupold VXIII's but they are close to 20 years old now, comparing them to the Conquest or newer Leupold's they are far better.

The 2 scopes you are looking at are going to be very similar in brightness, clarity, magnification, etc. Either one is a good choice

I went through the same thing a few years ago.

I did a lot of searches on a lot of forums. I'd say that about 75% of the people who mentioned that they actually owned both said that they like their Ziess better.

I believe that Ziess has better glass, but the Leupold is slightly smaller, and the warranty has quicker turnaround.

I went with Ziess. Since I don't own a VXIII, I can't compare the two.

ya that was probably me. i was in there yesterday looking at them both.

Cool cool.. I was the big tard talking with Ryan and Diane buying the Aimpoints...

If I remember vaguely.. he suggested that the Ziess was clearer glass... but you had like 4 scopes lined up. I think it all comes down to personal preference..

I'm a Leupold fan myself.

Had a Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8 for about 2 days. Nice glass but to my eyes no better/worse than Leupold. Mounted it on a rifle and it's just too frickin big. Might look good on a 26" barrelled rifle but on a trim rifle it just looks obscenely top heavy.

My dad now has it on a Schultz & Larsen.

Had a guy at the range last year bragging up his 3-9 Conquest and how great it was and how much money it cost...blah blah blah.
I don't think he believed me when I told him the 4.5-14 on my 220 Swift was worth way more than his "US made" Zeiss.

I have owned both vxIIIs and Conquests, and I much prefer the Conquests. They appear brighter to my eyes, and they have been just as reliable for me.

that's basically the same as i found in the store too (but it's always hard to judge indoors). i had decided on the zeiss but when they went to mount it, there was a small crack in the glass and it was the only one in stock so they had to send it out for warranty. i'll be waiting a week or two for a new one to come and was contemplating switching to the leupold or another zeiss.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3.5X10X44 and love it. Have Leupys too. All are excellent. If you are deciding between the two - you won't go wrong either way. I personally think my Zeiss has better glass as the brightness and clarity right to the edges of the lenses is truly excellent. If I had to pick between the two, it would be a Zeiss. Maybe it is just because it says, "Zeiss".

oh, okay.

basically what the guys in there said that i was talking to was that both are very good and comparable. i would be happy with either. the zeiss uses a little better glass and leupold would have quicker warranty and service. i personally found the zeiss just a little brighter and clearer (in the store) and thought the magnification dial would be a little easier to turn with cold hands or gloves on; and also a little bulkier and easier to find in a hurry.
