So out of curiosity why were those tabs cut off on the inside of the bottom hand guard? aren't those tabs what the hand guard grabs onto to stay sturdy? could you remove metal from the gas tube cover and have it work? you did a great job, makes the rifle not as goofy with that big long barrel. Im surprised no one has designed something that could do this and still keep the weight down.

The tabs are right where I had to cut the heat shield the upper handguard would fit. There are two more tabs at the front and the screws at the back. Im sure there is a way i could put some screws through it.

Going to have to move the forward barrel clamp ahead a bit so the upper will go down

Drill two new holes.

And that's that folks.

Looks great, but!

Where does the vented gas go? I know the originals collect powder residue like a som-beech already and I would say 60% escapes into the air. There is nowhere for the powder residue to go but to collect in the hand gaurd.

I'll be installing one of these next week too and I thought about the gases as well.

I'm not too concerned about where they'll go, I'll just thoroughly rinse things out and take the hand guard off occasionally for a deep clean.

I can't imagine the gases will cause any issues or malfunctions now that the gas ports are covered.

So I bite the proverbial bullet and got to work.

Using simple hand tools, hacksaw, pliers, file, and pliers I was able to remove the retainer and the sling loop within 10-15 minutes of work.

Going slowly with the area taped up I was able to easily saw the retainer off then twist the remained part stuck between the barrel and gas block with pliers until it weakened the metal and broke free. I taped up my front gas block and cut the sling loop off fairly flush to the gas block and cleaned it up a little with a file.

Sorry I didn't get any in progress pics. If anyone else wants to do this mod it is really easy once you look at what needs to be removed.

Here is the end result of my work.

The shiny metal on the barrel isn't from my work today it is from the handguard retainer moving over the past two years of use.

I will post more photos and details once my handguard arrives.

Update
The screws that come with the kit aren't long enough.
Ok for a better fit you will want to get these item
4 #10 1 1\4 machine screws
4 #8 nuts. Your going to drill out the threads so the bolts slide in. These nuts are about a 1\8 INCH thick.

This will make the handguard sit lower so it don't hit the buttom of the reciver. This will make it sit level.
