The hallway and clothesline deals are a sweet sounding idea. And on top of it all they are out if they not only get touched from behind but if they get touched from the front by a "live" zombie then they are "devoured" as well. Special recognigtion award for the most blood curdling scream from the lot that doesn't manage to shoot their way to (temporary) freedom.... :D

For front targets I still like the idea of balloons for heads. Cheap, not hard to clean up, sizable to any reasonable size that suits and the shooters can blow their own up. The only stipulation is that the balloons must fit through a guage circle so that one person doesn't blow theirs up bigger for an easier target. For zombie torsos that hang from the clothesline cardboard. Then the balloon heads are taped or tied by the stem to the cardboard. And elastic cord loop through the board that traps the balloon stem would make for easy head transplants to help keep the action flowing. After all I KNOW that the folks will all want to get lots of passes through the maze. And maybe different "hallways" with "doors" where zombies can come out from the side? That way they aren't all exposed at the same time. The only really big deal will be to find someone or some way to ensure that the back chasing zombie hoard advances at the same speed for everyone. A little variation is OK since this is purely for giggles after all.

Oh, this DOES sound like fun...

Oh how I wish I could get that complicated. Alas . . . I think I will have to fall back on my old motto, which is, "the harder something is to do, the less likely it is to get done." Here's the part that people will hate me for: if we use the indoor clothesline idea, you could do it with airsoft. Ouch!

Well if you only have 6 rounds per stage...

Go with the shotgun, best bang for your buck.

Bobby I, I'm not sure why you would want it to be all shotguns. I know the shotty would be great for spraying diseased grey matter, but you could certainly carry more ammo in something smaller, say a 9mm or .223 or something. Besides, the best weapon in any SHTF situation is the one in your hand at the time, right?

I really don't think it would have to be that complicated. I was actually thinking that outdoors may be a bit easier. One could anchor posts into the ground to hold the clothes line rig.

And really, any IPSC or IDPA course could be completed with airsoft provided the BB's could penetrate the targets.

This is a great idea!
I would be willing to set something up at the east elgin club in S.W Ontario if anyone would be interested!
let me know what you think:nest:

You can put me on the list. Lets keep the course simple at first till you work the bugs out of it.

Hey fellow Nutz! As with the rest of miscreants, I am interested in shooting zombies, or at least being prepared for the invasion. Anyway, a friend and I have been talking about putting on a zombie action shoot at our local range just outside of Edmonton. We are thinking along the lines of 5 zombie targets, 2 mags of 3 rounds each (mandatory reload, only 1 miss possible), possible 'friendlies,' a start line with gun and loose ammo on a table, constantly moving up the target line, etc. What do you think? Obviously, headshots only would count, miss any targets and you are dead. If you stop at any point along the way, you are dead. My thoughts are that you may choose whatever weapon you want, handgun, shotgun (slugs or buckshot only), or semi-auto rifle - but always with only 3 rounds per mag, 2 mags only, with the only exception being the shotgun (if it is tube-fed, of course). Thoughts??? I could also use ideas about targets - I am thinking about a metal post on a base (to make it moveable), a cardboard 'body' and some sort of head; a balloon, a styrofoam mannequin head, an angled metal plate, . . . We are planning to pull each shooter aside out of view of the range, then move the targets into different places before the shoot.

Where is this local range you are talking about? I'm moving there in late April and have no idea where anything is. Any info would help, thanks.

Where is this local range you are talking about?

The range I am speaking about is the Genesee range, near the Genesee power plant, West of the city. It is the longest range of any in the area (700m), and the cheapest one to join. You join the Canadian Historical Arms Society (CHAS) for $70 a year, get access to the range, and also the use of the indoor Phoenix range in the city on Tuesday nights for free. You can get your memberships at Lock and Load, 15889 116 Ave. (the best shop in the city, for sure!), just talk to Blair (425-4444). We will definitely be running this shoot after April, so you should be good to go. Even if you don't want to join the range, you could get a hold of me, and I can bring you in as a friend. PM me.

Oh really... There you go spoiling all the fun.... :D

Doesn't cowboy action quick draw stuff use primer powered wax bullets or something close to that?

would it be possible to pay for day passes

I'm afraid that range no longer does day passes, however, you could come as the guest of one of the members for $3 (or more, your choice), I could easily get you the name of one of the members who would be willing to 'sponsor' you for the day. As far as a tentative date, I should be finalizing that soon, but I need to go over it with the range committee to get the 100 m range shut down for those days. I am planning on having the shoot on 2 days, one Saturday, and one Sunday, though not the same weekend. I also expect to wait until at least June, as we need dry ground if possible, for there will now be some crawling involved . . . stay tuned to see what that's about.

Course design complete!

OK, we now have solidified our ideas for the first annual Zombie action shoot. I will give you the main ideas, but we will be keeping some things under wraps until the days of the shoot. First off, one of the major changes is that we will be providing the weapons and ammo. The first half of the course will be run with a rifle, and will require 1 mandatory reload. The shooter will then have to set the rifle down on the ground, crawl through a small passage of some kind, and then pick up a handgun, and continue the other half of the course without a reload. Targets will now be printed zombie heads with 'vital' zones on them which will all be a uniform shape and size (though different faces). There will be a winding path going through the target course, which will be taped off. The shooter will need to stay within the confines of the specified path, and will need to be continually moving, even for shooting. Each shooter will be required to stay for the person who shoots after them, to help out by pulling down targets or stapling up new ones. Multiple possible placements for the zombies will be available, and the zombies will be moved for each shooter, to keep things unique for each shooter. Shooters will be scored according to the time taken to get through the course, and hits and misses will be assessed as time penalties or bonuses. We will no longer be disqualifying people for missing zombies, but will still be disqualifying shooters if they do not keep moving throughout the entire course. Price for entrance is yet to be determined according to some cost vectors, however they are expected to be in the $5 - 10 range. Custom zombie militia (name to be nailed down soon) patches will be available to shooters at cost, and "Point Man" patches to be awarded the top 3 shooters, as well as a custom "trophy." We plan to have available comment cards for after the shoot, and will seriously look into all comments for next year's shoot, however, we need to keep things as simple as possible for the first year. If others are interesting in holding a shoot the same as ours, you can PM me and I will send you all the official rules, equipment lists, approximate cost, etc. when they are completed (soon). Also, if you have your shoot, the "Point Man" patches will be available at cost to be awarded to your top shooters. I think the combination of adrenaline, constant movement, small targets, time constraints, possibly unfamiliar weapons, and physical activity will make for a humbling, challenging, and ultimately fun time! Oh yeah, did I mention the onlookers will be able to make noise while the shooter is going through the course? A zombie apocalypse isn't silent, after all . . .:runaway:

There won't really be any requirements to participate. If a person doesn't have any experience with guns, we will do what we can to help them and particularly make them safe. We will also have a second weapon of each kind, so that we are able to show each shooter about the weapon, how to load, make safe, etc. We would like to get new shooters involved, and that's one of the nice things about us supplying the guns and ammo, one needs to simply show up with hearing protection and eye protection and some $$$.

Wow.

I thought XDPA was a little sketchy with their show up and kinda don't break 90 rules.

Multiple firearms in a match and possibly multiple firearms in a single stage/encounter. Hmm Ya I'll probably come but I want to know who is going that has experience in running a match and RO'ing stages.

I don't really want to give out names, but we do indeed have people with a great deal of experience that will be running things on all levels. I myself do not have the experience, but that is why I am doing the legwork, planning, purchasing, etc., as well as learning from those that do have experience. This is very much one of the reasons why we are trying to keep things simple to begin with. You need to realize that we are not doing any drawing/holster work, or any sort of running or ducking behind cover or anything like that. This is simply a slow walking shooting event.
On another subject, we have solidified the military force's name - U.N.D.E.A.D. - United Northern Defense, Eradication And Disposal. We hope you will join us.

I've been to a tactical carbine-pistol match, they are lots ofr fun. Each stage required the use of both pistol and rifle, usually starting with the rifle. When you transiton from one to the other you have to make safe and show clear for the RO. Its pretty easy to do that tho, when you run dry and the bolt/slide is locked back, drop the mag and move on.

That is precisely how we are planning to do it. We will be issuing only enough ammo for the number of targets that are available, so the shooter should run dry at the last target for the stage. Also, the RSO will always be following the shooter close behind, to watch for any sketchy moves that could be unsafe and to make sure the shooter is always moving. He will also be able to quickly check that the rifle is cleared. I think you will find that this shoot will be one of the most fun shoots you have ever tried. We are trying to walk the fine line between enough rules for safety and to quiet the whiners and a fun, loose competition where winning is only bonus, not the real goal. We fully expect to disappoint a lot of people with how badly they do, but then they will get to laugh at the others doing the same thing! I am thinking of this as less of a competition and more as an event, a party with live ammo.
