Sorry if this has been posted before, here's a pro Russian/separatist fighter holding an SKS. I thought there would have been enough AK's to go around.

There's a lot of intense battles happening in Ukraine

SKSs are great for when theres magazine shortages for AKs , and you have some ammo on stripper clips .. I would rather have a SKS than a AK with only one mag .. Thats a big downfall of the AK it cant be loaded with strippers ,, VZ is the best of both worlds thats why the Veit Cong loved them so much .

Good point and I have to agree.

Never knew the VZ was used in the Vietnam war.

Not to mention the mags themselves add a not insubstantial amount of weight/bulk to the load out. You can carry an extra 50% or so ammo for the same weight/space if it's all loaded on stripper clips instead of mags. For a "run from rabbit hole to rabbit hole" insurgency, where re-supply is never guaranteed, those extra bullets count.

I feel sorry for everyone in the Ukraine right now. Geographically, it's located in a spot that pretty much guarantees their neighbours will f@ck them over on a regular basis for minor global strategic gains. That's the long and sad history of the region.

Easy to point the finger at Putin and say "Bully!!!" but I don't think he had much choice. The US was running classic psy-ops, opposition funding, regime destabilizing, in the country for the past decade. Sooner or later, it was bound to force Russia's hand. The Crimean ports are far too strategically important for Russia for them to just stand back and say "Okeleedokelee neighbour."

The US and EU are as much to blame as Russia in all this. The Russians may be a lot less subtle, but in a way, they're being more honest about it.

Here's a few more

I have read that US troops in Vietnam came to hate and fear the SKS as much, if not more than the AK. Enemy troops would fire away until their AKs were empty, leaving a couple guys with SKSs to cover their reload. The Americans would pop up when the AKs stopped firing, only to get plugged by the SKS users.

^^^I have read about this as well. The SKS and AK have different reload rates. Thus while the AK's were reloading, the SKS's were still firing. It created an almost continuous volley of withering fire that the Americans fell victim to and were rightfully fearful of.

More fearsome yet is the probability that the ones with the SKS were more likely to be aiming their shots.
