Hi. You getting any clips with it?
When you get it there are several free U.S. military manuals here. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. Add the W's. .biggerhammer.net/manuals/ Fulton Armory can't spell. It's Ordnance, but that'd be one of the TM's to download.
Think Federal American Eagle brand 150's or Hornady Vintage Match 168 grain ammo if you can find it. Or load any 150 to 180 grain bullet using IMR or H 4895, IMR4064 or Varget. There are other suitable powders too, but these are fairly common.
The M1 Rifle is a beast to lug around for still hunting, but a 165 grain hunting bullet with those powders work well.
Looks like money well spent, serbinator, good choice!

are these powders used in MFS/Barnaul or norinco 308?
No, they're nowhere near dirty enough
The three powders listed are great choices for the Garand, 4895 was the original M2 ball powder the Garand was intended to use. 4064 and Varget are great too. Anything else and you'd be well advised to use an adjustable gas plug to save wear and tear on the op rod and receiver.
Nice looking rifle.

U should be ok with the norinco stuff. You can tell difference by the recoil when the action is moving pretty violently then you might shooting the wrong powder.
so i would need an adjustable gas plug for the norinco 308? ive read other people on here haven't had issues with norinco 308 and the m1 garand. how would i know if i need a gas plug or not?
Well, it's darn cheap insurance, I'd think of it that way. Adjust until it just cycles, then you're using the least force possible on what is now a 70+ year old rifle. The Norc ball is supposed to be basically dead on to M80 ball spec, which is the same as M2 ball spec, aka 147/150 gr @ 2750 fps. So you should be just fine, but commercial .308 you'd want an adj gas plug for sure. No idea how the Barnaul stuff chronos. To some degree it'll depend on the rifle too, a worn op rod spring will of course let things slam around more. No reported issues isn't exactly the bar I'd want to go by, you're talking about effects that could take 1000s of rounds to show up. You shouldn't damage anything, but I'd also want to baby a rifle almost 3/4 of a century old.
