CMP M1 Garand thoughts

If your cousin buys it and ships it to you, he's actually committing an offence, Stateside. It's called a straw purchase. That'd be buying a firearm for somebody who is not legally allowed to have one, Stateside.
Being a qualified involves more than just citizenship too. He's also violating his agreement with the CMP and will never be sold anything else.
Anyway, what gets done by the CMP is on their site. Somewhere.

Already buying a garand from a fellow cgn member. So i not gonna bother with cmp garand anymore.

edit: will create new thread of pics when i get it.

Hi. You getting any clips with it?
When you get it there are several free U.S. military manuals here. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. Add the W's. .biggerhammer.net/manuals/ Fulton Armory can't spell. It's Ordnance, but that'd be one of the TM's to download.
Think Federal American Eagle brand 150's or Hornady Vintage Match 168 grain ammo if you can find it. Or load any 150 to 180 grain bullet using IMR or H 4895, IMR4064 or Varget. There are other suitable powders too, but these are fairly common.
The M1 Rifle is a beast to lug around for still hunting, but a 165 grain hunting bullet with those powders work well.

Yes i am getting 5 enbloc clips with the rifle.

are these powders used in MFS/Barnaul or norinco 308?

Looks like money well spent, serbinator, good choice!

still haven't paid for it YET. ;) , waiting on the rifle to be finished and test fire results/video and then for it to be shipped after my EMTs transfer through. :D after i get i will likely drool all over it for a few days and drool more when my ammo arrives and then drool like a st bernard when i go shoot it :HFU::rockOn:

No, they're nowhere near dirty enough :D

The three powders listed are great choices for the Garand, 4895 was the original M2 ball powder the Garand was intended to use. 4064 and Varget are great too. Anything else and you'd be well advised to use an adjustable gas plug to save wear and tear on the op rod and receiver.

Nice looking rifle.

so i would need an adjustable gas plug for the norinco 308? ive read other people on here haven't had issues with norinco 308 and the m1 garand. how would i know if i need a gas plug or not?

U should be ok with the norinco stuff. You can tell difference by the recoil when the action is moving pretty violently then you might shooting the wrong powder.

Well, it's darn cheap insurance, I'd think of it that way. Adjust until it just cycles, then you're using the least force possible on what is now a 70+ year old rifle. The Norc ball is supposed to be basically dead on to M80 ball spec, which is the same as M2 ball spec, aka 147/150 gr @ 2750 fps. So you should be just fine, but commercial .308 you'd want an adj gas plug for sure. No idea how the Barnaul stuff chronos. To some degree it'll depend on the rifle too, a worn op rod spring will of course let things slam around more. No reported issues isn't exactly the bar I'd want to go by, you're talking about effects that could take 1000s of rounds to show up. You shouldn't damage anything, but I'd also want to baby a rifle almost 3/4 of a century old.

Barnaul ammo is showing as 145 grain FMJ at 2749 f/sec as per their website , i likely wont shoot commercial 308 then. I just got a yugo mauser and i have my sks and a 303 smle no4mk1 that my friend is holding on for me until i have funds. all of the parts as far as i know are NOS and the barrel is a criterion barrel. i highly doubt now ill have problems with barnaul/mfs or norc 7.62 ammo in my garand, extractors can always be replaced because of the steel cased ammo. this badboy wont be babied itll get shot (hopefully) every weekend at a range or on my friends 25 acre land.

You should be fine with the Barnaul then, that's M80 ball spec too... It's filthy filthy stuff however, half a box had me spending ages cleaning powder fouling out of a Savage 10FCM. Wicked cool fireballs from the muzzle though. Steel case won't damage anything, the cases are waaaay softer than any parts in your rifle.

Anyone know where in canada one might find a adjustable gas plug for a garand. Ive got one coming in the future as well in .308 and I want the plug here when I get it. So I dont have to wait a secomd longer then I have to
