The M1 Garand Build Thread

Just wondering if that stock would work for a 30-06 garand build ?

Thanks !

By putting a picture of this one beside an USGI stock it seems like it would work. Just wanted to confirm...

Just got a stock package from Sarco. Brand new GI stock and handguard set for 59. Nice , turns out to be one of these stocks converted back to 30/06 by grafting a piece onto the front end. Italian makers marks still on the wrap. doesn't look half bad.

Got pics ? Too bad I have a Boyds coming...

Anyone got a reamer to lease/sell ? Sold mine after my first build (big mistake).

Still have to rig up the parkerizing rig to repark the receiver.

Got my barrel and bolt from Greece without any delay from Canadian Custums ! (took like 1week to receive them)

Sent you a PM about a reamer Megaclocker.

I'm still having a timing issue of sorts after switching op rod springs. First round is difficult to chamber, with or without the stock on. Doing some reading I've found similar stories that say a new bullet guide cured it. I can't see any interference but i guess it's worth a try.

If it can help you... I had a few problems at first too.
-Short stroking, sometime rifle would close on an empty chamber (often on rnd 2,3 or 4)
-Hard to chamber first round

-->Short stroking ended up being a too long Op Rod spring. (1inch too long)

-->Hard to chamber, was cheap numrich clips combined with the fact that I wasn't loading them perfectly. (Receiver was brand new, which didn't help. AEC clips + loading the clips more carefully solved the problem.

Short stroking(op rod doesn't fully cycle) can be due to any of the following;
-worn/undersize gas piston
-worn/oversize gas cylinder
-fouled gas cylinder
-loose/cracked gas cyl plug
-fouled gas port in barrel
-defective op rod spring
-binding op rod
-bolt binding in receiver
-non MILSPEC/underpowered ammo

Timing (bolt closing at wrong time) problems are normally due to any of the following;
-worn or too high accelerator bearing point on bullet guide
-worn clip latch or weak clip latch spring
-worn follower arm or follower arm pin
- worn op rod catch
-worn or too high hooks on op rod
-worn/deformed follower rod
-worn op rod catch

A newly parkerized receiver may cause the bolt to not fully seat when loading a clip. Wear improves this. Other causes of failure to feed/load the first round properly, besides short stroking, can include worn clips, improper lubrication, binding bolt or op rod, a weak op rod spring, a dirty chamber or improperly sized reloads (watch out for out of battery detonation because of this).

Just like purple said, short stroking can be blamed on worn piston on the oprod or worn gas cylinder or under loaded rounds.
The spring being too long can be it too, but that is very unlikely, I can't remember exactly but the spring length should be between 19.78" and 19.25". If you end up cutting the spring short to make it work later on you can have issues with the bolt damaging the receiver heel.
Timing issues: first thing you should try is get a new bullet guide. It should be at least .0179", the really good ones are .0183-084", again I can't remember exactly. Before you do anything else try this.

If I remember correctly some where on the site there is a post of drawing numbers for parts and dates but i cant seem to find it or does someone have a real good list they could send me would like to get my second build to all matching dates.

The biggest challenge with restoring/rebuilding a US made Garand is always to find a serviceable barrel which is correct to the receiver by mfr and date. With a Breda receiver look for all drawing numbers to incorporate the letters "BMR" or "BMB". For a Beretta receiver it's "PB".

If you post your receiver make and s/n it isn't too hard to come up with a list of drawing numbers for parts which would have been original to the receiver. Forget about finding Winchester barrels as well as many parts for early Springfield Garands unless you are prepared to lay out a lot of $$$. Depending on mfr date and maker correct stocks can also be a bear to find.

Hi all. I just posted a request in irunguns forum asking them to import some criterion barrels. If you are interested please go over there and show your interested in hopes that it will encourage them to pursuit it.

My build is done!

And the other side:

And yes, I painted up them receiver markings with white crayon....

If you need any white crayon, and cannot raid your local day care provider's stash... just ask me and I can send a stub of crayon to you and get you started...

Cheers and keep on helping them noobs around here!

Wow!.
That is one seriously purposefull looking rifle.
Care to share with us how you went about re-finishing the receiver and gas cyl., etc?.
Man, if that one shoots even half as good as she looks ...

Receiver was a New Beretta, no kidding! Never issued. Bought it here on the EE Forums for a super price from a GR8 CGNutter! :D

Barrel was new Criterion from EE Forum and of course a super CGNutter south of Base Borden, ON

Stock (Fajen or Boyd's???) was specially sourced from Kalifornication!

Gas cylinder (Stainless of course) was Matte black TremClad BBQ paint by previous owner. Works for me!

The base M1 Garand was bought right here on CGN with Italian parts that all my friends jumped on because they wanted all Italian marked parts. I'm a match shooter, brands don't bother me. SA marked parts work fine for my shooting game! :D

Rear aperture is an NM 0.0520" diameter hooded baby from Numrich (sadly they are out of stock currently)

Rear sights are Italian MOA standard issue, I'm happy with 1 MOA adjustments.

Barrel/chamber mic'ed out to 5 thou above the 1.630" SAAMI GO Gauge, great enough for casual competition, and I can full length re-size without too much brass stretching and overworking!

Hope this helps. Cheers all !
