I ordered a KAC MAMS brake for my new KAC rifle. I was planning on sending my upper in to have Mark at OST install it. He won't be able to do it for a few weeks though, so I'm considering doing it myself. I've never installed a brake. Is there anything special about installing the MAMS? I looked online for instructions but couldn't find anything. What is the bare minimum I need to install it? Will just a vice and wrench do? Cheers

Make sure you vice the barrel and not the receiver or you damage the upper. You can use a standard wrench with the correct size. Would suggest a adjustable wrench. If your using a crush washer keep in mind those suckers have a lot of give so make sure it's tightened properly. If your using shims you have about a quarter turn after your tight. Don't use locktite, rockset or anything else on the threads. Last time I used rockset took a half hour with a blow torch to get it off.

It is dead simple - the same instructions to install the M4QD Flash Hider or Triple Tap apply.
-- With the exception the M4QD and 3T had a cut at the 6 O'clock and the MAMS has a index pin at the 12...

We can email you the install instructions - but its pretty simple

OP "What is the bare minimum I need to install it?"

If you have to apply a bit of torque to get the old one off. You should have something to take the strain off the upper. Searching "Barrel Extension Torque Tools" from brownells will show you options. (Yes there are lots of different options for relieving this strain.) Normal armors wrench will have the proper size cutout for typical muzzle devices. And as someone mentioned already shims. and a vice. Das it.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So it sounds like it's pretty easy. I think I'll do it myself. I'll order one of those AR15 vice blocks. Will I need a torque wrench? If not, how do I know how much pressure to apply? I read something the other day about how you're supposed to hand tighten the MAMS to 11 o'clock and then wrench it to 12 o'clock. Is this right?

Where did you find the mams? I want one too
Purchased it at OST. I believe they're sold out now though :(

PM sent.

Will a regular barrel extension rod, like the one made by Giessele, fits into KAC proprietary barrel extension?

Planning on doing the install this weekend. I need to pick up a torque wrench and armorer's tool first. Not really sure what to look for when buying a torque wrench. Should these two work well together?

KAC’s 5.56mm 7-Piece Shim Set (P/N: 96051)
Instructions for Muzzle Device Top Dead Center (TDC) 12 O’Clock Orientation

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Combine the minimum number of shims between the muzzle device and the barrel so that at “hand tight” the muzzle
device’s TDC is approximately 1 & ½ slot width short of the barrel’s centerline. Then de-grease parts, apply ROCKSETT to the threads, and torque to
20 to 30 ft-lbs to align the muzzle device’s TDC with barrel’s centerline

1. Start by test fitting the combined #0
“no notch” (.031”) & #1 notch (.020”)
together as shown above between the
back edge of the muzzle device and
the barrel’s shoulder. This shim
combination thickness = .051”.
In the above example, note that the
muzzle device’s TDC is actually at 6
0 o’clock (or 180 out of TDC) when “hand
tight.” (That is to say the Helix Slot is at
1 o’clock, not at 6 o’clock as it should
be for this type muzzle device.

2. From the .051” shim combination, subtract
0 0 180 of rotation (180 rotation = .020”) this will
then equal .031”, which in this case is the
thickness of the #0 (no notch) shim, and test fit
as shown above. In this case, the desired
TDC is now just past the barrel centerline (i.e.,
at 1 o’clock) with only the .031” #0 shim, so
some small additional thickness is required.
(Note: the next test fitting (Step #3) should be
done with the shims installed on the muzzle
threads at hand tight

3. After adding .003” to the .031”
thickness = .034” results in the
correct TDC position to the barrel
centerline (i.e., 1 & ½ slot width
from TDC), at hand tight, as shown
above. Using the Quick Chart to
the right, .034” is a combination of
a #2, a #4, and a #5 shim
(.015”+.010”+.009” = .034”) of
shim combination thickness.
(Note the back edge of the next
slot is aligned with the barrel’s
centerline at hand tight as well--
use this as your guide.)

4. When the threads are degreased,
ROCKSETT applied, and
the proper 20 to 30 ft-lbs torque is
applied, Muzzle Device’s TDC and
the barrel’s centerline will align as
shown above for this type muzzle
device, for the M4QD FH and Triple Tap Muzzle Brake the helix slot at the
front edge of the muzzle device
will be at 6 o’clock, for the 556 QDC Flash Eliminator, or 556 MAMS Muzzle Brake the Suppressor Index Pin will be at 12 o'clock.

I have PDF's to email out (sorry folks I got busy with work and have been away from this).
I can't see to get a PDF to host at photobucket.

Good luck with the install, give us your impressions of the MAMS device. I'd like to see a comparison with the Griffin Armament Flash/comp & the Precision Armament EFAB? If anyone does one?
