That doesn't look like a Mauser on the left.

Yeah, that jumped out at me, too. But the guy second from left is wearing a decidely German/M43-ish looking cap. Gotta think it'd be more likely the lads in retreat would pick up a functioning Nagant than lads in advance would wear enemy kit.

Assuming, of course, the hat is what I think it is. God knows.

Could it be the Finns? It would explain the M/43 ish ht and the nagant.

William Joyce was shot by a British soldier. Joyce was hanged in 1946 after a trial by the famous Brit hangman Albert Pierrepoint , who traveled to Germany and Austria to execute 200 war criminals,..a very busy fellow

Excellent 2005 movie about Pierrepoint starring Timothy Spall in the title role,
"The Last Hangman". Covers his life's work. Worth a look.
