Id take the type 97 you can almost but two for the price of an mr1 or one and a boat load of ammo. Reliability is going to be a hard toss up some t97's like mine broke in nicely and never ftf anymore others cant finish a mag. Ergonomics obviously go to the mr1 considering its a conventional style rifle. Weight the t97 is lighter and better balanced no stupid long barrel like the mr1. Accuracy departmen for the mr1 the skys the limit due to it being able to mount mostly all optics. The t97 irons do suck and unless you want the bubba ftu you need to get the pla yma95 scope. The t97 obviously wins for compactness also it has a flash hider wereas the mr1 doesnt.

MR1 for me. When you get a benelli, you know you are getting a solid quality product.

I wouldn't take either of those.
If I absolutely had to chose between the two , Benelli hands down. I'll take Benelli quality any day over Chinese manufacturing. If it weren't for our classification system which wouldn't matter anyways in a shtf situation would people actually be purchasing a type 97?

No it wouldnt exist on canadian soil if all options were open. Heck id own an polytech legend ak47 if there was no classification but in that case the mr1 wouldnt be here either

If cost is a non-issue then it is a no-brainer, the Benelli is far superior. The thing is that typically cost is a factor for people, so something has to be pretty darned good to justify twice the cost.

I think you would get significantly different poll results if you phrased the question like "If someone was going to give you one for free, which one would you take?"

That is much more realistic for which one people prefer more. I would prefer an Audi S4 over a Honda Civic, but when choosing my next car I can not ignore the cost factor.

If you do choose the MR1, I think this one is the best style. Usually I prefer pistol grips, but I think the pistol grip on the MR1 is wonky, so this is the best looking one:

Rifles are not born out of a vacuum, cost is definitely a factor I'd like to ask. The MR1 costs $1600 at the moment (on sale at Cabelas), while the Type 97 costs $1000, so I think it's a pretty decent comparison.

I haven't shot a T97, I hope to see one in person at some point.

I have an MR1, and its actually a nice rifle. It's reliable, accurate, and sturdily built. It's never going to feel like an AR15, it shoulders more like a shotgun. It works though.

Would be a tough choice. My experience with the T97 was good. It's a compact, very simple rifle, and was perfectly reliable for me before I sold mine. I have no experience with the Benelli, though I'm certain it would be a higher quality firearm, I'd probably still take the T97 going off your list of criteria.
The T97 is not particularly optics friendly or customizable unless you do the FTU, but if we're talking SHTF I think the KISS principle is best anyways. Its iron sights get the job done, it's certainly combat accurate. Being a bullpup it's naturally handy at going from close range/vehicle scenarios to longer range. It's ergonomics are a weak point, but are certainly useable with practice. Cost wise it definitely wins out over the Benelli, meaning you can afford more ammo.
End of the day though I would take my AR or Tavor before either of these rifles.

Save up and buy a true NR black rifle if you are at all concerned with SHTF. I would avoid the T97 based on zero availability of parts. Go Tavor, ACR, XCR, RFB... anything that has support and parts and is better if it at least has some proof of reliability in combat. That narrowe it down to what: Tavor and ACR for NR?

My biggest issue with the t97 is the lack of spare parts, than again I shot 3000 rounds true mine and never needed any. I own a mr1 now and quality does show . Both rifles are easy to take apart and clean.

This is a good review of the Benelli MR1 http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2010/08/bryan-hyde/gun-review-benelli-mr1-tactical-rifle/. The T97 is a derivative of a military rifle the (The QBZ-95) and as such has had much greater effort put into its development than rifles like the MR1 and a lot of other black rifles produced only for the civilian market. i.e ACR, XCR, RFB. In regards to spares for the T97 you can buy a couple for the price of some of the other rifles listed.

I have 2 MR1's and like them. Rifle stock ones like the picture above. Not a pistol grip fan, they don't work well with scabbards.
Never tried or handled a t97, so I can't really say which I prefer.

If you like Monte-carlo style stocks, the comfortech is your best option. I use the factory fixed stock and I have to acknowledge, this rifle is made for bigger men.

While I can virtually make a fist around an AR-15 pistol grip, the MR1 pistol grip fits nicely in the heel of my palm. The length of pull is rather long too, so if you're around 6 feet or taller, this rifle is going to feel natural when you shoulder it and look down the sights. Like I said earlier, it's not an AR15, and I'm a little faster changing mags on my C7. After a lot of dry practice and some time at the range, it's not by much though! The only downside is that you can't drop mags with your control hand. However, you do operate the bolt catch with the control hand (middle finger works the best!). Operation of the cocking handle is performed underside like a Kalashnikov.

despite the votes, the answer is pretty obvious to me.
Im surprised the votes reflect the opposite, must be a lot of norinco fans here.

To me it depends on what you want. T97 basicaly a t95 which is a militery rifle and as someone said gone throug the ringer. Both are great toys, from what i read so are you after. for me i am after a fun toy for range and maybe trying out 3 gun events. So for my needs t97 sounds good. What do you want it for.?
