Do I Need/Want a 378 Wby?.... PHOTOS UP

Douglas your a monster... while I am not particularly recoil shy, I would like to "enjoy" my shooting sessions rather than "tolerate" them... once they get up over the .366's... I ain't buying without a very specific purpose... and I can't rightly think what that might be...

I just never owned one before Hoyt..............How could one go through life claiming to be an obsessed gun nut and never have owned and shot extensively a 378 Wby? I can't see it being any worse than a well loaded 416 Rigby, and I doubt it will be as obnoxious as my old 450 Ackley................

Next question............What glass for a 378 Mk V, in gorgeous wood and rich blued steel...........Suggestions Gentlemen?
I'm leaning towards a pretty, shiny, Leup Vari X III in 2.5-8 or 3.5-10..........God knows it has the capability to use this kind of glass.............got a nice shiny 6.5-20 Vari X III.........that might be a little much though......;);):cool:

Hoyt; Monster may be a bit harsh............but I have been referred to as an insensitive boor, that may be more accurate...........

Yep BUM, I have no use for anything over about 42 mm either.......my 1.5-6 Zeiss has a 42mm objective and that's as big as I want on any rifle.

I kinda like the Vari X III 3.5-10 as well, not the matte one but a nice, pretty, glossy one..........in nice, pretty, glossy rings...........

I'd go with the 3.5-10, but then I'm a little biased. That's what I run on my own .375s although a recently departed 700 Custom shop rifle wore a 3-9 Zeiss for its whole stay. A B&C reticle has its uses, doesn't have any moving parts and doesn't weigh anything.

A mirror polished Weatherby should have a gloss scope and rings. Its only fitting, even if mine don't.

In an abrupt change of subject, the smooth bright finishes on rifles don't give rust a place to start. I think we've been sold a bit of a bill of goods when cheapassed sand blasted finishes were sold as "non-reflective". Probably came from the same advertising staff that call Tupperware stocks weather-proof.

Just another way to save money which is what American consumers want.

I am certainly looking forward to your traditionally honest and forthright assessment after you have had a chance for a "side by side" session.

OK.......Leupold double dovetail bases and rings ordered in high gloss blue.....both low and med rings just in case (WSS actually had them all.....GASP) and 3.5-10 Vari X III ordered as well, found a nice high gloss shiny black one, for a mere 700 bucks..........GASP again!!! Gotta try out these DD Leupold bases and rings.........see if they hold up to the rigors, if not then I'll be going custom base and 3 rings.........had to do that on the Ackley.

but not here only got 2 banks in town and it's 30 miles away..........It does cut down on the impulse buying though.........

Same scenario as Vermilion Bay from the sounds of it. But we have a little bake shop though that makes good butter tarts..! Good choice in scope, I have two of them. And all I use is DD bases with no issues, then again there not attached to anything more than a 375 HH.

If those rings/bases don't work check out NEAR. I've used his stuff on mkvs in 30-378, 338LM and 338-378. With or without breaks on, even heavy scopes never moved at all.

Near maybe the only firm that makes a one piece base for the Mark V. Some would suggest that the two piece bases pass more torque to the scope tube

Well whether I need/want one, I now have it in hand and what a beautiful rifle it is......many light handling/hunting marks in the stock but nothing too unsightly, an absolutely stunning piece of wood for a factory rifle and not near as heavy as I anticipated. I have the 3.5-10 all mounted up in the shiny Leupold DD rings, but of course WSS screwed up and sent matte bases, even though I ordered the gloss by number and confirmed it with the order lady. HOWEVER......the metal work is not all high gloss nor is the stock, I guess this is a feature of the Euromark........no skipline checkering or white spacers either, it's actually a very nice looking rifle and not nearly as garish as a Mark V deluxe. I will find my camera and post some photos tomorrow........
Marshal has already supplied some 325 gn semi spritzer RBT bullets and the gentleman I purchased it from threw in 60 brass and a set of RCBS dies, so I'm ready to carefully assemble some bone crushing loads and head out to the pasture to try them out..........will get back to y'all with the results and more photos of this program. I may have a new spring coastal grizzly rifle...........
