best semi auto shotgun for self defense, what is your opinion

What is it with all you Nancies and this .. Why do you need it for self defense, call the police, blah blah blah...grow a pair you wankers. If the guy wants advice on a Semi for protection, give advice on the question, don't prove your a B!tch by getting him to justify why he want's it. Do you justify why you want to own a firearm...no I didn't think so. If you have nothing constructive to add, move on to the EE section on buying some testicals.

Now back to the original question, if your looking for rock solid reliability in a defensive semi auto shotgun, I think the Benelli M4 is the way to go. Proven reliability, mag a capacity, 8 rounds with Ghost loading. There's a reason the US military use them, because they go bang every time, and that's what you want. It's pricey, but it comes down to you get what you pay for.

LOL and if im not mistaken ^^^^^^thats a cop saying this. So take that Liberal Pansys.

Since you ask for the S-A, I'll say the M4 is, notwithstanding the fact that Benelli designed it for, and it is the U.S. joint services semi-auto combat shotgun (model 1014). The 590A1 has been used by the U.S. Marines since 1988. I also have one of those and swap back and forth between those two behind the bedroom door.

I love my Remington Versamax, dead reliable, recoils like a 20 gauge and softer then an M2, and is a fraction of the price. I paid $800 after taxes with the rebates going on. With my mag extension from TacOrdanance I can regally fit seven 2 3/4" shells in the tube, one in the chamber, and one ghost loaded, for a total off 9 rounds of semi auto. Over the winter I'm going to send my barrel to Casey to cut it down and rechoke flush with the mag tube at 22".

I agree on the Benelli M4s90, although to be honest with our laws I'd prefer a 20" Mossberg M590A1 due to the extra ammo capacity.
8+1 in the pump just seems like a better option than 5+1+1 with ghost loading.

Nobody mentioned what time it will take to load tube-fed vs mag fed shotty. You can't store them loaded, but you can have mag loaded lying near in the safe.

I would definitely trust my Benelli M4. Very reliable and easy to shoot.

Regarding the time it takes to load it, I can throw a round in the port and get one or two in the tube very quickly. If the situation calls for more rounds to be fired, and I don't think it ever would, I figure those first few will buy me some time.

The best and what I use for a semi for home defence is a Dominion Arms Outlaw. Pulling both triggers at once makes it a semi some would say. Seriously though if you need more then two shots from a shotgun to defend yourself ya probaly should have brought out a black rifle cause your doing something wrong.

So it would take you only 2 shots to deal with 3 or more drugged out people breaking in to your house with intent to harm. Wow, I'm impressed at your efficiency.

Truth be told there is no magic number of rounds that is perfect for home defense, my general belief is the more rounds you have the better off you are. There is no guarantee that after your first shots your target will go down, nor do criminals always work alone. Who knows, you may not even have to fire a round but would you really want to gamble on your life?

Personally I'd trust a pump more than a semi (Grizzly mag is what I have available) but that's because I've used a pump shotgun my entire life and know my way around it like the back of my hand. A semi is usually easier in the case of someone who may panic and shortstroke the pump. The key though is familiarity. If I have to choose a semi, I'd trust the Hatsan MPA, from what I've read and watched it is a reliable semi shotgun at a good price point.
