There's some confusion over whether it's one or the other. All of my pistol manuals refer to it as a slide stop. Let's settle it once and for all.
To me the "slide stop" is the area of the part that actually locks the slide to the rear.
The control surface you can actuate would be the slide release.
For me, it's a 'what came first, chicken or the egg' type question...
So...
If you shoot the gun until the slide locks back, the slide STOP came first... It's a slide release AFTER the slide STOP went to work...

Same for me.I voted Slide Stop. I release the Slide using the sling-shot method….
Slide release for me... but really it comes down to semantics.
I only call it that because on an AR it is the bolt release.
