For me, it's a 'what came first, chicken or the egg' type question...

So...

If you shoot the gun until the slide locks back, the slide STOP came first... It's a slide release AFTER the slide STOP went to work...

Chuckle!

We still haven't settled the clip vs. magazine debate.

But when you begin shooting, it's the slide release.
When you're finished shooting, it's the slide stop.
So why not call it the slide release-stop?

Slide release for me... but really it comes down to semantics.

I only call it that because on an AR it is the bolt release.

To me the "slide stop" is the area of the part that actually locks the slide to the rear.
The control surface you can actuate would be the slide release...

If that makes sense. (I don't care either way, just sharing my opinion)

In a Glock you have one part that acts as slide stop (take down lever) and slide release (to release slide forward after showing clear, going dry, locking back the slide, etc etc etc).

So.....

Whatever, who cares! call it 'the little lever' lol.

I call it a slide stop most of the time. I always use it to release the slide.

Back when James Yeager seemed like he knew what he was talking about and I didn't know better, I overhanded guns, despite the fact that I'd successfully hit the lever 100% of the time for the previous...I don't know, 5000 times?

This clicked for me at a TLG class. I was faster and better with the slide release.

It's not a huge amount of time to give up and I don't see WAY more malfunctions being generated by the overhand method so if people want to do that, I usually just shrug and move on to more important stuff. If they're trying to seriously dial in their shooting for maximum speed and reliability, I recommend using the slide release.

If they make a big deal about it and start going off, I conclude they're idiots and don't give them another thought.

It's a slide stop. I'm not an expert so I'll function the gun whichever way grabs me at the time, mostly I'll overhand the slide (not because of Yeager, it just works for me YMMV), I'll sling shot sometimes and on a rare occasion I'll disengage the slide stop. This last action feels most unnatural of the 3 methods, likely because at home I just can't bring myself to let a slide slam shut without a cartridge being sheered from the mag...so I never do it. (I only use snap caps in my revolvers).

I voted Slide Stop. I release the Slide using the sling-shot method….

^^
this. +1 it's a slide stop, on many guns there is no lever/button on a side of a firearm at all and to close the action after reloading the operator needs to pull the slide back.
