I have a Troy claymore on my 16 inch AR-10, an Allen Gunworks linear on my non restricted ACR 223 barrel, an S&J linear on my non restricted ACR 300BLK barrel, an S&J linear on my 12 inch 300BLK AR, a PWS triad on my 12 inch PWS 223 AR and a modified S&J linear on my 9mm AR. The linear brakes don't do much besides make it more comfortable to shoot by pushing the muzzle blast away from you and everyone around you, the triad holds the muzzle down slightly, it's a little louder but is still very manageable for noise. I had an S&J linear on my 6.5 inch AR and it made that rifle fairly comfortable to shoot.
The only way the linear comps could reduce muzzle rise is if the vented upwards which they don't and the only way they could reduce recoil is if they vented out the sides at a backward angle which they don't. The only way I think they help in either department is by adding mass to the muzzle.
I had a Rainier Arms mini comp and it worked very well for reducing muzzle rise and recoil but it was loud. It wasn't bad on my 14.5 inch AR but for some reason it was painful on my 12 inch AR. I'm not sure how the 2.5 inch difference in barrel length made so much difference but it didn't last more than a couple trips to the range before I put it back onto a longer barrel.
I really like the PWS triad, it has the cut between the upper opening between the forks cut a little deeper which is how it pushes down a little and it manages muzzle blast and flash decently. I don't notice recoil much on that rifle because it has always been a very smooth shooting rifle with the piston system and now I have an Enidine hydraulic buffer in it and it hardly feels like much more than a 22 now.
What length is the barrel you're working with?
Picked up a PWS TTO Brake this past week. Haven't got to shoot with it yet but is supposed to be a nice rigs, and said to make a difference in rise and flip.
Hey C, in terms of how loud it is, would you say that it's pretty comparable to any other comp, or do you find it a bit more discreet? I know it might be a long shot of a question, but if you've had a go with a few comps, maybe you'd be able to make out the difference...???
I have the FSC556 on a 16" barrel AR which is the TTO with flash suppression. You'll like it. I haven't tried it on my SBRs. Maybe I should.
The GA brake is a bit on the loud side. Not too bad from the shooter or guy behind you. Sounds a bit louder than my FSC556 and Triad. I sold my Triad for the GA. The GA felt more stable when doing double taps.
Thx bud.
GA now has a Blast shield, which may be an option, MM did a good review on it & the flash comp as well.
No probs.
Oh man, I just peed my pants a little. That's awesome. Now I could have a FerFran clone without having to get rid of my M4SDIIs. Thanks for the heads up!

I've been on the GA website for the last hour checking that thing out...I want one sooooo bad!!!!
It's gonna be for a MK18, so 10.3". I'm starting to develop an interest the Griffin products. Gonna look into them a bit more...maybe a Tac Comp or a Flash Comp with their new QD blast shield...
By the way Chris, thanks for the awesome info brother. That really shed some light on a few of my concerns...
Wouldn't the blast shield just turn it into an even more expensive linear comp?
Nice to be able to remove it and essentially have a two in one muzzle device but a guy will probably end up with a preference one way or the other and just leave it alone after figuring out which way they like it better.
True...but I think you hit the bullseye with "...essentially having a two in one muzzle device." For me, having that extra small option goes a long way. I know that I'll never end up having to engage in a real life CQB fight where all this stuff makes a world of a difference, but the course of fire that I'm on that one particular weekend may need a little mod to my primary. Plus, it looks friggin awesome!!!
Very true, and for us civilians looks is often the most important feature
The standard linear sure doesn't look very impressive but it works. The Claymore does exactly the same thing but looks 1000x better.
My biggest hangup is that I have a hard time justifying spending more than $100 for a muzzle device.
The GA Tac Comp & Spikes Dyna-Comp look very similar. I've got a bunch of devices planned for Mk18, we'll see how they fair in terms performance AND annoyance at my local club![]()
I guess we are lucky over here in NZ, I use the NEA minican. The Crusader muzzle brake that came with the rifle is friggin crazy loud on my 12.5" NEA and I hate it. Loving my minican however, much better when I am engaging multiple goats while on search and destroy jobs. I am a pest contol operator and the NEA is quite handy on goats......
Just another thing that came to mind...after looking at a few different manufacturers of comps and brakes, I noticed that most of the higher end muzzle devices are supplied with a set of shims rather than a crush washer. Is there any difference between using either one? I'm getting the feeling that there is a reason for each one...
