.308 reccomendation

I agree ....... There's lots of cheapo/entry rifles out there that folks buy and restock. Doesn't make sense.

If it makes any sense to replace the stock of any rifle so that it fits you better, it makes some sense to do it with a low priced rifle that works well.

P.S - why don't you take that American as your primary rifle on your next fly-in trip... rather than loan it to Jim-Bob to shoot skunks in his back forty???
I was going to buy a Handi Rifle for a skunk gun, but decided to give Jim-Bob 1/2 a chance with the RAR.

As for the fly-in ..... I have a 700 here for that, if in fact there ever is another fly-in. Maybe I'll get a moose tag on a draw here.

So you would take the 700 over the American? Hmmmm...

Well, the H&R will be Handi for those skunks...

Goodluck...

The M700 375 Chatfield-Taylor is already a proven slayer with legendary status. Almost mythical here on CGN. :)

Mythical perhaps... but you would trade it any day for an American in .30/06... & Brian46 wouldn't blame you one bit...

why not buy from a manufacturer with a custom shop that will fit the rifle to the buyer?

A lot of entry level guns have actions so sloppy it is like comparing a 1950's non syncronised transmission in a gravel truck with a million miles on it wiithout a rebuild to a brand new ferrari.

Every now and then I try and see if things are getting better yet I just tried a Mossberg MVP patrol and it is well above entry level pricing by the 400$ that was said in this thread but it was basically a useless firearm. The amount of slop in the bolt would require so much force to drive home that trying to remain on target while cycling thge bolt is impossible. This is nothing new though, I have had firearms from other manufacturesr with similar quality issues over the years and simply got tired of it.

Perhaps because some people don't have enough money to start out that way. They buy a rifle they can afford. If they like it, then later when they can afford to they may decide rather than to replace it to make it somewhat better. Not the be-all and end-all of the gunsmith's art, nor a demonstration of how much money they can throw at it, but just a bit better.

I change out the stocks first, because it is a proven, accurate action, second, because I have found that the Boyd's thumbhole designs (both FT and VT) fit me better than any other stock I have used in 40+ years of shooting... and at the Boyd's price point, I can justify and afford to put them on any and every gun I own.
