Is there a shortage of .22 ammo everywhere?

One thing I noticed is that its tough finding .22 ammo. Guy at Cabelas says that the .22 ammo comes in a couple of times a week and is put out on the shelves in the morning and is sold out by the end of the same day. They do however have other calibers except .22 ammo. Canadian Tire had nothing either. Its cheaper to shoot but if you can't buy it, may have to pony up and get a 9mm. Its forcing me to think about what caliber I should go for. I wanted to start with a .22 to learn proper safety techniques and get comfortable using a pistol. However, after paying for a gun, the stuff I need to get to transport it,paying for range membership etc. it adds up. Want to shoot alot to get decent with the pistol but ammo gets pricy if shooting anything besides .22.
I sure hope we start getting decent inventory soon. Guy was saying its been like this for last couple of years and that the yanks are hoarding everything and we are getting next to squat.
Might have to just settle for a BB gun if this #### keeps up.....:p
 
it has been going on for awhile, and I am quite confident the hoarding is going on here as well. shelves fill and empty in the same day. get it when you can
 
If you want .22 , look at the site sponsors (gun stores) not sporting goods or hardware stores
Eg: general gun or reliable
 
Is the public shooting more ammo than can be produced? NO.
The constant talk about a .22 shortage, and the scare of law changes has given the consumer the desire to hoard. This is the perfect play for the retailer.
Everybody has at least a thousand rounds, if not a whole brick. There's no shortage. Just plain old consumerism.

I don't consider 1000 rounds of 22lr to be much at all. One day of playing around it is very easy to go through 200 - 500 rounds. 1000 rounds in a day is not unreasonable. I go through less with my bolt action but chewing through 500 rounds with a 10/22 and a speed loader doesn't take much time at all.

I like to shoot when I want so I have on hand enough ammo to do so during shortages. I don't consider it hoarding, I consider it planning for my realistic needs. I also keep a few hundred rounds of 22lr set aside just for grouse hunting that I don't blast off during target shooting because I don't ever want to screw up grouse season if there is an ammo shortage. It just amazes me how many people rush the gun store in August looking for ammo. I stock up during the off season when possible (especially Black Friday and boxing day). I think it's smart. Buying in bulk is very cost effective.

I'm in southern Ontario and there is quite a bit of .22 ammo in my area. CCI mini mags and Remminton Yellow Jackets are everywhere... Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Walmart and all the local stores have them along with some of the cheaper stuff like the 555 or 333.
 
I too am in southern Ontario and what I see is a whole lot of rip off dealers selling 22lr for way more than its worth telling everyone its the fault of the distributers, I am seeing cci mini mags for 10 bucks 100, yellow jackets 6 bucks for 50, rem buckets for $100 and garbage 222 for $18 at a well known chain, I have even saw 555 for $35. all quite ridiculous, reminds me of gas prices, nothing but taking advantage of the consumer plain and simple, dealer network on here is the way to go for sure, the local shops just keep shooting themselves in the foot time and time again. their loss
 
We ain't making .22 in Canada anymore, after the Liberals killed the industry here most of ours came from the USA. Then there was the panic over Obama being elected and then there was the panic over Obama and Sandy Hook and Obama being re-elected, and through it all there was the panic over Obama's minions creating a possible lead ban. But those things are all over and still no relief? Capitalism should be solving the shortage but because it costs millions to start up .22 manufacture and because the governments are always mixing in no one wants to make the capital investment in making what should be a very cheap and low profit bullet and nothing has changed. Sure cuts down on my shooting and I'm really sorry I invested in a new .22 pistol before the worst of this got started.

I may be a believer in supply and demand but I won't be forgetting the LGS folks who have Federal listed at a +300% markup either, I don't care what happens.
 
Last week i was in town (baron), and i was there just at the right time, i was preparing to applied tags price to CCI Velocitors, they had one brick ( 5000 rounds, available), i bought the whole case, this ammo is just fantastic... JP.

We were just offered yellowjackets from a Canadian Rem distributor at well over $5 per box. That's wholesale pricing , not retail, so don't blame the local store too much :)
 
In YYC, bought a brick of winchester for $40 at the Thorncliffe gun show. Like others have said, "buy it when you see it". Of course that drives the prices up further.

Maybe I should have bought all 6 bricks but I didn't want to be the guy who "emptied the shelves".

Ah Poo. I didn't attend for fear of buying some thing I didn't need. Didn't occur to me that ammo would be sold there. Was there any powder for sale there?

Winchester what? 333s? Please don't tell me that.

"buy it when you see it" Ya, I do that, but I haven't seen any in a long time now.

A quick check on Canadiantire.ca shows me there is no stock of CCI Mini Mags of any kind in any stores around Toronto. Where are you seeing these mini mags?
 
Is it Friday already? These threads are becoming just like SlideFire Fridays. .. it's out there..lets not fuel the propaganda wagon..lol.
