I once came upon a large gathering at the front gate to the base, 'bout 10 yrs ago. A lady had hit a doe. MPs were present, several vehicles and rubber-neckers. I drove up, couldn't get through, walked up to find out that the animal was alive, broken back, trying to crawl away, but couldn't. MPs could not shoot her due to paperwork, they were waiting for the SRD officers.
I walked back to my car, drove around the blockage up to the deer. No knife. Took a screwdriver from the tool box. Had to hold her down and shoved into her ear. Pretty much the hardest thing I ever did. Got up, walked back to the car, drove away.
Another time, hunting season 2013. Early in the season, I was still shooting gophers. Heading to work. Truck coming toward me. Saw the headlights blink, figured a deer had passed in front of it so I slowed down. Got up to the truck and a saw a large doe on the centre line, trying to get up, again broken back. 6 oilfield workers standing around her. I got out, looked around. Walked back to my truck, loaded my 10/22, walked back, put the muzzle in her ear, pulled the trigger, walked back to my truck. Drove away, while they dragged her off the road.
Don't think anyone called SRD on that one.
