Euthenising an injured deer; ethics vs legality

This post isn't entirely factual. The birds that they won't give you a permit for are Eagles, Bald and Golden for sure. When I tried to get a permit for the golden eagle I picked up, I was told by the Ministry of Natural resource that the only people allowed to possess the body or feathers of an eagle are Natives for spiritual rituals and Universities/Museums for educational purposes. This is a law that covers all of Canada as far as I know.
As for owls, I have two mounts. One Great Horned Owl who died of carbon monoxide poisoning from sitting to close to the chimney of the shop my dad worked at and the other is a juvenile Snowy Owl that had starved last winter because of the heavy snow and cold temperatures, a friend actually picked it up and gave him to me. My friend Lyndon has a Great Grey Owl mount, it was found last winter after starving as well.
Hawks I am not sure of as I have never ask about them.

Things may vary from province to province. I had a "mount/no mount" list at one time and it's probably available on the DNR website somewhere. I know for a fact they won't give a private individual a permit for a Great Grey owl here in MB, so again that appears to be different in SK. Another is a Long-eared owl, no permit here. Snowy owls are generally good to go, as are Great Horned owls, and Red tailed hawks, but they're as common as ravens around here anyhow.

Yeah, it does.

And it seems to vary from CO to CO too, as far as whether they decide that poking at a frozen corpse is good enough or if it is going to take a more detailed examination.

Saskatchewan is one of few provinces left that will give a permit for picked up raptor for taxidermy though too.

My great Horned Owl was a road kill, I picked it up and it spent a week or so in my freezer before I could get it in (blew up the engine in my truck). Permit was cheap, swore an affadavit to the effect that I had picked it up on the roadside, when and where, and the fella poked and prodded it a bit and signed the form.

I had heard other stories from others going to the same office, that were not as smooth.

Cheers
Trev

As for the actual topic of the thread, I have been lucky enough to have never had to euthanize an injured wild animal. If it ever does happen I will most likely call a CO and get permission to do so.

and during this process the poor animal twitches in agony! I guess some folks just don't have the balls to take charge of the situation and act upon it quickly and do the right thing! It's really too bad that some folks just can't shed their wussiness!

Let nature take it's course. I'm not authorized to dispatch game animals. Call the fish cops and let them deal with it. Not worth the hassle otherwise.

Society has programmed us to believe that letting a deer suffer is immoral, but If you found me suffering on the side of the road with no hope of survival, would you end my suffering for me? Do animals suffer more than people?

I don't want to get into the mercy killing debate, but people need to realize that there is no sharp right and wrong, it's a big gray area at best. We perceive animals to suffer differently than people but that is simply cultural programming.

I believe it's more about having a heart. And not a black one like some folks seem to have! I have huge heart for animals, and humans not so much, as you can probably tell! An injured animal in that kind of situation simply can not help it's self nor can another animal help it. It is simply dooms day for them. The quicker they are dispatched and put out of their misery the better.
There are plenty of do-gooders out there to help you out on the side of the road, but seems not so many to help out an animal.
If I came upon you on the side of the road, as you asked, with no hope of survival and I knew for sure that you had a black heart, I reckon I may ask you if you would prefer that it all ends now or do you want me to call for help. If you were to say "yeah, end it now for me, please", I'd have to say sorry man, I just can't do it without first calling in for permission!;)
